Just an update, the number of winter killed RES I have found has been significantly high this year. The good news is that this happened with primarily one year class of RES in the 6" to 8" size range which was a very large year class that I had planned on thinning this year. Large and small RES are noticeably absent from the floaters I have found so far. I'm not exactly sure what happened but the rapid warm up at ice out may have mixed the water column up too rapidly for some RES to adjust.

Some of those high winds right after ice out might have done a bit of mixing too.

Sorry to hear, keep us posted!

I am hoping that the die off was primarily offspring/genetics from the 30 additional RES I acquired from "the traveling fish truck". I suspect that those may have come from a more southern location than the my initial stocking of 110 RES that I know came from north western KS. In the last 4 weeks I have found 108 floaters in my little 1/4 acre pond, 101 of those were 6 to 8" and from a very large year class of RES, just three in the 9" range, and just three over 10". I have also found roughly three dozen in the 3" size range. I am amazed how at long it has taken for some of these to float, the ones popping up over the last week have been missing skin, eyeballs, and cheeks, they clearly have been sitting on the bottom since ice out that occurred back in February.

The frogs finally came back out of hibernation yesterday, they seem to be fine. I am still catching very gravid Yellow perch too.

Jeff, I did add a handful of mature RES to the pond last year just in case and feed trained a hundred fingerling RES over the summer that I got from a buddies pond. I did a siene survey last fall and it looks like I did have a really good RES spawn over the summer, lots of 1" to 2-1/2" RES. I do believe I had small number of RES survivors after last years winter kill and that these survivors are much better locally adapted to the cold and likely reproduced. So far I have only found a 3 RES morts after ice out this year and two of those appeared to have been caught by smallmouth but not eaten, both of these 5" RES had bite marks on them. I will post more updates as water temperatures warm.

Here is a good read on RES in northern climates.

Interesting. What would you say have been your biggest surprises both positive and negative with the development of your pond? Is there anything you would change if you could start over?

Biggest surprise was finding out how difficult Redears can be to catch, it took quite a while to crack that nut. Biggest dissapointment were the yellow perch, with as small as the pond is my water temps in the summer are just to warm for them, if I had to do it over I would leave yellow perch out of the mix. If I could start over I would make the pond bigger. (grin)

It is funny, those redears are just a little different animal. Sure you can catch 'em fishing for bluegills, but if you understand the little differences. . . .

Always love hearing about your ponds!

Only because you were spoiled in your youth! HA!

Perfect pond, love the updates... THANK YOU!

I caught one of the biggest Golden Shiners so far this evening, easy 10". Who knows, there might be a state record swimming in the the pond.
