Staying dry and warm in a kayak during early spring?

Anyone have any recommendations on clothing to stay dry early in the open water season? Some of the dry suits I've seen are as much as a new kayak.

I have never invested in cold weather swimming gear, I have done scuba diving in 40 deg water with a wet suit (40 below the thermocline) and the wet suit did OK for a while. In the kayak, I use rain gear to keep me dry from splashing and wear light weight layers that I can strip off if needed and bring dry clothes in case I go swimming. I always wear my life jacket and shows I can kick off if needed.

Neoprene muck boots, and rain bibs.

Dry change of clothes in the truck.

Waterproof pants. Then like the others, always a change of clothes in the car.

Chest waders and a warm coat and always a life jacket
Early to bed, early to rise, fish all day, and make up lies.
