The Mission Of The NEFGA  The Nebraska Fish & Game Association (NEFGA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting Nebraska's outdoor enthusiasts through conservation, education, discussion, and outreach programs in a way that will ensure outstanding angling and hunting opportunities for today and future generations. Those involved in NEFGA are committed to this mission for two reasons. First, we are passionate about outdoor Nebraska and treasure its unique and varied hunting and fishing opportunities. Second, we are concerned about the ongoing declines in outdoor pursuits both within Nebraska and across the nation.
These are significant declines from any perspective, but what the data fail to adequately reflect is the strain this attrition puts on state agencies responsible for safeguarding our natural resources. As outdoor enthusiast decline, license sales decline. As license sales decline, agency budgets decline. Already these agencies are facing difficult times. If the trend is not reversed, the vibrancy of our fish and game populations could soon suffer as well.
Consider also a comprehensive study conducted for the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies – The Future of Fishing in the United States: Assessment of Needs To Increase Sport Fishing Participation. In the study’s final report, the authors state that, “Only a very few number of anglers (31%) and nonanglers (13%) stated that within the past year they had recalled seeing any advertising, information, or news coverage that would have helped them go fishing or learn more about fishing.
Putting data and statistics aside for a moment, NEFGA believes that outdoor adventures – particularly hunting and fishing – are healthy pursuits for mind and body. They build friendships, bring families together, promote appreciation for natural resources, require physical activity, inspire goals, reward achievement, and instill lifelong memories. Bottom line: hunting and fishing are fun!
NEFGA understands that declines in hunting and fishing, combined with ongoing threats to our natural resources, are not battles easily won. It will take a wealth of partners working collaboratively to stem the tide. For our part, NEFGA has established an enduring vision to foster community and involvement in outdoor activity through responsible education that honors, enjoys and promotes outdoor Nebraska.
