Default Suggestion: Forum Guidelines

Just saw something interesting on Prairie State Outdoors, a website in Illinois not unlike NEFGA.

Under the box where you post your message - every time you post - is this:

Pool Rules
  1. Keep it clean.
  2. Stay on topic.
  3. Be honest and accurate.
  4. Don't say anything you wouldn't say to Mom at the dinner table.
  5. Let us know if you see a problem.
I thought that was pretty great. The people who derail productive posts and degrade the quality of good-natured community here at NEFGA probably aren't going to read the lengthy rules, but something simple like this makes it pretty tough to find argument, fault, or misunderstanding.

I like the heading "Pool Rules."

When I was a kid growing up in Fremont, there was a small sign behind the admission counter at the municipal pool that read: "We don't swim in your toilet. Please don't pee in our pool."

I never thought about the similarities between online forums and swimming pools until Teeg's post.

The forum should also devise a rehabilitation program for people who get kicked off but want to try and clean up their act. Maybe 50 hours of Richard Simmons videos would be a good starter.

That or some type of "community service" like picking up trash. If a photo or two can start a controversy, maybe posting a picture of trash bags filled with contra-ban and litter can begin to fix it.
