I got that in an email this morning. That's an amazing read. I forget just how good I have it here as a Husker fan...

I'm not a Husker football fan. I root for NU in wrestling, baseball, and volleyball. Growing up in SW Iowa we only got Omaha stations so I had to listen to the crying after the football game about how the refs cost them the game or some other excuse. I will say I was and am a Hawkeye fan so I was use to losing several games a year, while you Husker fans were not.

These types of articles still make me proud to live in Huskerland, and even feel a tiny little twinge of support for the football team.

I have lived in Nebraska for 20 years now, and I refuse to convert until Nebraska has 3 back to back to back losing seasons, then maybe. That being said, my son was born here and I have buried 2 dogs and several friends here. I guess that makes me a Nebraskan too. There is really no difference in the people from Iowa and Nebraska outside of Omaha. When you get say 30 miles out of the city in any direction, people waive, smile, ask how you are, and actually care. If you bash the Cornhuskers, I don't care. If you bash Nebraska, I will set you straight. On gamedays, a Hawkeye flag proudly flies on my front porch. Sorry, black is just cooler than red.

So let me see... the Husker football team has the richer history compared to Hawkeye football, and the Hawkeye wrestling team has the richer history compared to Husker wrestling. What, you don't like traditions and rich history? I know a guy who grew up in SW Iowa as well and he's the opposite. Loves everything Husker except wrestling, then it's Hawekeyes.

Seriously I must say that when it comes to Nebraska football in this state that there are lots of fans that are just insane and think this program is on the professional level. Thats what I dont like.

But................ going to a game and being in the atmosphere is something every single person here should experience. You will never forget!

Oh, don't get me wrong. Hawkeye wrestling is numero uno in my book, but I will root for the husker wrestler if he's not going against a hawkeye, especially if the opponent is a lowly ISU guy.
Back to the football, I've only been to one game and it was the USC game. I went in with the attitude of cheering for the Trojans, but by the end of the first quarter all of the snobish USC fans were annoying me so I started cheering for the huskers. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to cheer about.

I am so glad that Creighton doesn't have a Football team. Now I don't have to feel conflicted during football season.

I know there are those who will disagree, but the article is right on. Nebraska fans really are the class of college football. There are always exceptions. Heck we have exceptions to civil behavior on this forum, and we don't have 85000 on here.

But by and large, Nebraska fans are a class act. We know our football, we respect our opponents, and we love the game.

GO BIG RED!

(BTW - Isn't it about time we get a Husker Smilie? Or a Go Big Red smilie?)

I'd suggest that Nebraska fans benefit more from that fact that they're just good midwestern people...rather than their team affiliation...there's something to be said about folks who still have close ties to the outdoors and the land whether through agriculture or 'whatnot' (there's a NE term for you...)

For contrast/support I offer Philadelphia people and how that is reflected in Eagles fan behavior...

So if it's just a "midwestern attitude," how come you don't always hear stories about how great Iowa, Iowa St., Kansas, K St., Oklahoma, OK St., etc fans are and how much of a class act they are? I get really really sick of people on this forum looking for every excuse about why they shouldn't or don't like Nebraska Football. Yeah, you probably hate that we have had and will have better tradition than any sort of team or fan base that you support and I understand that. It also doesn't bother me that anyone doesn't like nebraska football; you don't have to be a fan just because you live in the area. But it's super annoying when non-husker fans try to down-play something like this article, or a husker win, when they just want to hate on the program and don't have their facts straight.

The same things are said when teams come to Omaha during the CWS. It's not just the Husker fans, it's the Nebraska way of life. There is no place like NEBRASKA!

Because we don't live in those places. I'm sure if you were in Ames or Lawrence or any other Big 12 village you would be hearing how good those fans are compared to another. Husker fan is no better/worse than any other fan base.

I think a difference is, you don't hear about how good those fans are compared to another by people who aren't from there.

Agreed, but I think winning plays a key role in it. With winning comes national exposure for the program and the fan base. And since places like Ames, Mannhattan, Lawrence, Stillwater etc have never had the sustained level of success like NU did, they never had the national exposure to their program and fan base like NU did. Do I think NU has good fans? For the most part yes I do, but they also have their fair share of knuckleheads, just like every other program in the country does. Lastly, it's a hell of alot easier to be a "good fan" when you are winning. String a 3-4 losing seasons together and I would be interested to see just how good those fans are about getting their butts into Memorial stadium to watch another Sun-Belt team.
