NBC broadcaster John Madden retires

NBC said Thursday that the burly ex-coach who has been one pro football's top broadcast analysts has decided to retire. The 73-year-old Madden has been working for the past three seasons on NBC's Sunday night NFL game. His last telecast was the Super Bowl between Arizona and Pittsburgh.
Since he left coaching in 1979, the former Oakland Raiders coach has worked as an analyst for all four broadcast networks. His "Madden NFL Football" is the top-selling sports video game of all time.
Madden is reluctant to fly and often traveled to games in a specially-equipped bus. He said in a statement that he still loves all aspects of the job, "but I know this is the right time."

Agreed. We need someone more "controversial" like the late Howard Cosell!

Dennis Miller was a poor choice, also. Picked over probably the better choice, Rush Limbaugh...

I know Madden has more knowledge of the game in his pinke than most of us can ever imagine, but he annoyed the crap out of me. I remember once an eight minute conversation he had with himself about the tag on an oxygen tank one of the players was breathing from. That was some riviting television for sure.

Agreed, Fish on. He might have known something about football, but he sure didn't talk like he did. He stated the obvious over and over. Like,"Well the bears have to score more points than the packers if they want to win this game." I would rather listen to Dennis Miller's obscure references that made me feel stupid for not knowing what he was talking about than listen to Madden who made me feel dumber for listening to him in the first place.

All of his Brett Favre this and Brett Favre that talk, along with being the master of the obvious drove me up the wall.

Maybe he and Pat Summeral can go play golf together. Pat Summeral is a terrible announcer. Remember last year when he did the husker game against clemson.

Not exactly who the player was but i'll use Roy Helu.
