    Default catfish question

I was crappie fishing today and caught 3 26" cats in 4 casts on a twister tail/ jig. It would of been 4 for 4 but I got broke off. My question is: Pre spawn group or feeding frenzy? There were some nice 13" crappie in the same area and a lot of top water Gar action in the area. my poor light rod/reel got a work out!

My guess sight feeding catfish. I once caught 8 in about an hour crappie fishing with a tube jig after the first one, I started repeating that retrieve and kept getting bites, also seen that happen ice fishing.

I had an girlfriend that did that all the time. I catch cats randomly on cranks but she caught them all the time on about any artificial bait. I called her the Butler County Bullhead Queen. I don't think she liked that.

    What sex were they?

Actually, I'm guessing that it would have been a "feeding frenzy". I am betting there is something they were there feeding on.

WORK: is that annoying time between fishing trips.

I guess I'm doing OK, I have 3 pigeons named after me in Japan?

Have the channel cats started spawning in Nebraska yet?

    No.

So, then, yes, by definition I guess you could say they are "pre-spawn". But, if by saying that you mean they are beginning to show spawning behaviors, I would say nope, not quite yet. In our big rivers they started migrating up into tributaries a long time ago where many of them will eventually spawn, but they are not necessarily starting the spawning process quite yet.

Spawning for our catfish does not happen until July.

Ill add a bit. Out of prob 50 channels caught in the last 2 weeks I have seen 2 that were starting to show the typical spawn look. Very dark and puffy swollen heads.

i've probably caught more channels on white grubs and jig heads than any other artificial. i was crappie fishing at WT last year and caught a 10 pounder that smashed it on the drop. i've caught them around schools of bass and gill fry this time of year and catch them often on the rocks during the spawn while i'm bass fishing. could have been the magic of the barbie pole. here are two dancing bananas...

"I have the impression the American sportsman is puzzled; he doesn't understand what is happening to him. Bigger and better gadgets are good for industry so why not outdoor recreation? It has not dawned on him that outdoor recreations are essentially primitive, atavistic; that their value is a contrast value; that excessive mechanization destroys contrasts by moving the factory to the woods or to the marsh." -Aldo Leopold

I guess by pre-spawn, I was referring to how they aggressively feed prior to spawn (for a few weeks), it's a magnificent time up on the Red River. I guess it should be starting soon then huh? Do they act similar down there Daryl?

Let me just chirp in with a comment I have made before. . . .

Them channel cats ain't just scavengers that swim around eating dead junk off the bottom of the "lake".
