It's been going on for years, I've seen them cut the tail off also trying to stay under length(duh?). I'm glad that a few of them got caught, problem is it a operation of many.

What I quoted there would be the approximate replacement cost for those fish. By replacement cost I am referring to the cost to raise a fish to the size of a fish that was harvested.

That is just one way to figure the value of a fish. I would agree, to me the value of those 21 wipers would be much more than that, especially when you consider that those were fish of exceptional size and the time it takes most anglers to catch just one fish like that. I always say that big fish are hard to catch not because they are so smart, but because they are so rare, and the rarer something is the more valuable it is!

It is darned sure that the harm they did to the resource was way more than what they might have spent on fishing permits.

Agree River Rat entirely! In those cases the privelege to fish and use our outdoors resources should be taken away for seveal years. And if all states or most within the Midwest would reciprocate, then those people would not be able to get a license in nearby States as well. A simple fine is not enough! Two nights ago I took trash out to dumpster in our comlex and noticed two large white bass thrown away. Darn they were good size too! Made me sick as a waste too of our natural resources. Tried to think who might have done that and if I hear will say something to them.

If they get convicted under The Lacey Act there will be another $10K. My undertanding is "they" admitted their intention was to take them back to the state they came from and sell them as "falsely" labeled fish.

I sure agree that cases like this should be 'front page in the paper' material including pictures of the guilty, and the fines should all have REALLY high minimums. (But then I think crimes that get committed against people don't normally get punished severely enough either....) AND I'm guessing I'm not the only one that kind of hopes that the officers looking through the suv for fish were not TOO careful as they 'dug' into the different compartments.

You've always heard rumors out there about "buried fish" I guess they are true. Think of all the joy those fish could have given a 5-10 year old kid... let alone big kids (adults).

This whole deal just blows my mind. Why would someone go to all of that trouble to do this when there are plenty of other kinds of fish that can be taken legally...unless wiper meat is some sort of black-market aphrodisiac...

There was a Dirty Jobs episode where they were raising wipers for sushi...

Hopefully these 4 will have all their gear and vehicle(s) conviscated along with loss of hunt/fish privledges and a huge fine. They (the LEO's/CO's) also need to go after whoever was buying the fish, likely been going on for a while.

Heard of people from Colorado coming down and doing this as well. I know some of them got busted last year.
