Default Law to Help Address Nebraska’s Invasive Species Issues

From the NEFGA.ORG News Release Forum:

LINCOLN, Neb. – Gov. Dave Heineman earlier this month signed LB 391 into law, giving the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission a tool to help control and prevent the spread of invasive species in the state.

According to Dave Tunink, Game and Parks fisheries division assistant administrator, the legislation introduced by state Sen. Ken Schilz of Ogallala prohibits the possession, import, export, purchase, sale or transport of aquatic invasive species. It also allows Game and Parks to adopt and promulgate rules and regulations governing the inspection, decontamination, and treatment of watercraft capable of containing or transporting aquatic invasive species.

Rules and regulations are being drafted and will be available for public review later this year, including a listing of aquatic invasive species. The bill outlines penalties for boaters who refuse to submit to a boat inspection by an authorized inspector or refuses to allow watercraft decontamination. This summer, the Nebraska Invasive Species Project and Game and Parks will have authorized inspectors providing information at reservoirs across the state.

Karie Decker, Nebraska Invasive Species Project coordinator, said the new law also created the Nebraska Invasive Species Council, which will serve as an advisory council for state invasive species policy. It also will coordinate invasive species management and research across the state for the prevention and detection of invasive plant and animal species.

What can we buy or make at home to spray our boats down at home or after we got out of the water? I mainly fish the same lakes 70% of the time but I do travel out of state to fish and fish other lakes around Nebraska.

Maybe Mr. BoatCop has a "formula" to spray and will "pipe in"! I'll send him a "hint"!

Cleaning with Soap and Water? Ammonia? Vinegar? Chlorine?? or just water to remove the buggers and dry- as they need moisture to survive?

Glad this is happening, especially the inspection/contamination rules! I think this forces more people to prevent the spread of invasive species and educates the general public on how important this is. Overall good for our state.

    CLEAN-DRAIN-DRY. No magic formula.

The link catfishclark shared above does have a formula for a saltwater mix that can be used on equipment that cannot be washed with high pressure and/or hot water.

Please accept my apologies, I don't understand the question.

I've never been a believer in "Thought Police".

    Until, maybe, now!

Since Mr. BoatCop may get the same news releases, I suspect he was "at the ready".

Those silver carp really can do physical damage when they jump outta the water and hit you - I've been hit by some bigguns...

I've tossed bleach in the bilge/livewell before. I'm kinda scared to put ammonia in. I'm not sure if it reacts with aluminum but I know it will make brass brittle. I think I'll skip the saltwater in my aluminum boat. It's good to know that cleaning, draining and drying gets the job done.

Thank you, fishstory! LB 391 deals with ALL invasive species, not limited to zebra mussels. I suspect the most glaring one is the spread of the mussels, but IF you have been "smacked in the noggin" by them flying fish, you may not agree!

And, Clean-Drain-Dry isn't an option on them silvers!

Stupid question: those carp can be transported if they're dead, right? I mean this law won't change that?
I have never yet caught a fish on the first cast, nor have I ever made a first cast without thinking I would catch a fish .

I suspect once it's dead, it ain't considered "invasive"! In fact, it would automatically fall in the "good" category.

still waiting for them to invent some sort of port that you plug an anti-invasive species "fog" into that decontaminates the part of your boat you can't see. I more or less a local fisherman so I don't fish waters with these problems (I hope.) Getting my livewell/ bilge drained is easy, but with my 25 y.o. deep v boat, there's always some water up in the bow some where no matter how high you jack the thing up, so drying it out would be around a week and a half process, and I go fishing a lot more than once every week and a half. We can only hope that the cocktail of rancid water, various oils, and spilled beer is unsuitable to life! I'm surprised nobody's come up with a sonic, photo, chemo, something or other already and sold it as the "Lake Savior". Not that any of those would be fool-proof or even work, but with as many BS products out there, I'm surprised someone hasn't attempted to profit on it, lord knows how many destination fisherman would buy that in a second.
