Default Summit Lake Last Night~This morning

I so wanted to be able to post a WHOLE bunch of pictures and be like LOOK GUYS! Instead I get to tell you that:
I got out of work late! I stopped and picked up Jim (Bassmaster7823) And Headed home to load up. We grab the dog, I forgot about everything (ex. shrimp, worms, "protection")

Finally we are ready to leave...Plan was to hit Standing Bear grab a couple Bluegill, hit walmart grab some mantels and fluid for the lantern and start our hour drive up there! Well, I don't think there's any bluegills left in Standing Bear, actually I'm almost positive they are all gone because we couldn't catch one to save our lives! Jim had his bobber go down a few times but couldn't hook em...So, we decide we'll just get them when we get up there...

We hit Walmart, and we're on the road. Excitement running through our veins, we can do this...we can do this! We get to Blair and I said, Taco Bell or KFC...ehhhh, SO we go all the way down to Burger King...some good folks up there...and pull into the gas station next door, it said "Bait" on the sign. I walked in and asked the lady, so what do you have for bait? Well, we have some worms and lures, I think. SO, I walked around the corner and to what did my wondering eyes should appear...OUR favorite BLOOD stinkbait that was sold out everywhere around here. So, I grab 2 jars!! YAY, even more excited...if we can't get any gills we've got the best stinkbait ever made...pshhh we'll be fine!

So, we finally get up there, we stop and get our $4 park permit, we drive down the road a block and there's a DNR guy. He stops and then I stop, he backs up. I said we just bought, he was still filling out the date. He said ok. I said so...where's the hot spot? We were told by the boat ramp...well, THE WHOLE LAKE is doing good. There's a couple spots he pointed out that had people on them but he said before he pulled away that they were hitting everywhere. So, we go to a Jetty by the boat ramp. I tell Jim your job catch a couple gills, I'll unload the truck and get the lantern working...it's about 8:15-8:30 almost. All of a sudden I hear some profanity coming from the end of the jetty and then some more and as I'm walking closer, I see Jim setting the hook. I was like YAY!!!! (a little too soon) He couldn't get a hookset on any of those either. So I'd imagine they weren't bluegills...maybe turtles...or something! (they have to be!) I get the fluid in the lantern, the mantles on...light it...YAY!!! My mom's lantern works after how many years...

So, I start rigging up my poles. I get my shrimp one in the water, look over and one of the mantles fell off! The lantern is now HOT! It's about 9:30ish. Dark! Oh great!! So, I burn my fingers on the wingnut, and dumped water on the lid so I wouldn't burn myself EVEN more. I get everything set back up go to bait my other pole and I hear...YOUR BOBBERS GONE! YOUR BOBBERS GONE! I run over set the hook and reel in a 13.5" LM on SHRIMP!!! Then nothing and nothing and nothing until 1:30AM Jim lands about a pounder catfish! So I guess we aren't moving now....

SO my great night out without Joe...turned into a couple nice runs, a small catfish and a small bass! THEN a crappy night it turned into a crappy morning because it had to be the foggiest I've seen it all year. I could see about 4 yellow breaks down the center, that's all the further in front of me, which isn't particularly cool when you've been up almost 24 hours!!

SO after this disappointing and depressing trip...I'm going to bed with hopes of landing a few tonight or early tomorrow morning! Psh I want my gut feeling back! I believe I have lost it...I wasn't cocky all night, I just a feeling we were going to nail them and we didn't even catch a bluegill! I want to catch some fish this weekend!!!! I want my mojo back, too!!! Please, Thank you and good night

The fishing might of been lousy but at least you got out. Sometimes the rotten trips are the ones I can remember most.

We were there friday and sat night, got about a 6 lb cat friday night, then sat. morning did well on bass and gills. One gill was 10 1/2", then sat. night we did well on cats, caught 2 in the 15 lb range and one about 3 lbs. Had a lot more runs and bites but couldn't seem to hook any, most were caught on leopard frogs or gills, all were released except the 6 lber.

I think we called it at about 3:00...I wish we could have a do over weekend! It just wasn't our weekend at all. I had good ideas that just didn't pan out! ahh oh well shake it off and wait for next weekend! Thanks for listening to me whine, guys. It sucks!

I think the popularity of Summit is going to begin to wane. The easy catches have come and gone. I've fished that lake consistently for 3 years and it is a lot more difficult to get a good catch now. I don't say that because of one experience. I say that because of the way this season is trending. Typical of lakes in Nebraska, there seems to be a peak after renovation. The fish will get bigger, but they won't be so easy to put on a hook. A lot of boats were on that lake today!

I'll second that, this is the first time I have been there and targeted cats specifically, I thought we did well but have heard stories of non stop action of huge cats all night. I do bass fish at summit quite a bit, maybe 10-15 times a year, it has dropped off for me a lot, used to catch 50 bass a morning easy...now maybe 20 tops, and yes the boats have gotten ridiculous, but what are you gonna do? Fishing is good, you can't blame em...

Looks like I picked a good weekend to be out of town!

Chuck that's what I told Jim...He only caught 4 or so all weekend it isn't like it was that much better....Still would have been a little but...I guess I picked the wrong lake. I know I was nailing this time last year 10 for a 4 1/2 hour period, so I don't know what happened in a year but....
Thanks Joe, you definitely caught more fish than us! Next time you go out of town, I'll have it planned a little better and we will go to the BEST lake in the state! LOL
