    Default New State Record walleye

The word going around is that someone has caught a new state record walleye from Lake McConaughy. Apparently it is somewhere around 17 pounds. Has anyone else heard about this?

It has not dawned on him that outdoor recreations are essentially primitive, atavistic; that their value is a contrast value; that excessive mechanization destroys contrasts by moving the factory to the woods or to the marsh." -Aldo Leopold

I have heard of several new state record walleye caught this year out of McConaughy. If a fish of this size was caught, it has not been certified by a biologist.....the most important requirement for it to become a state record. The largest fish that we have weighed this year (on a certified scale) was 15.2#.

Yep, the rumor mill is running rampant, but as Ross says (and he should know), it has yet to be confirmed by an agency employee on a certified scale.

Of course, they do have 30 days to claim it. Maybe they are waiting like some of those Powerball winners do...

This rumor has been started every year for the past 15 years. I remember hearing this from friends in high school. "oh did you hear someone just caught a state record walleye from the Mac, it went 17 lbs" If I believed everything, there has been a 17# plus walleye caught every year at big Mac for the past 15 yrs.

In fact if we keep an archive of threads on here dating back further than a year, you can probably do a search and find a thread just like this one for last year too.

I once saw someone catch a 18 lb egg laydened walleye verfied by an uncertified portable fish scale. Thing was a monster caught on shore. The teenager wanted to keep it, but with the constant peer pressure being applied by jealous anglers and all of sudden "protectors of the species", the kid caved, had a few pics taken and measurements taken then released the beast. I'm sure the kid got the MA and the photo would give the approx. weight.
I don't know if the eye would of weighed in as a new record and better, but it was once in a lifetime fish for sure it was worth mounting. I've seen none bigger in the ten years sinced I witnessed it.

I think if you look back you will see that there is a post about every year on the forum about this as well.
