Default Expo Is Chance to Learn Lifetime Outdoor Skills

NGPC news release, 4/30/09:

LINCOLN, Neb. – In one day, a visitor to the Nebraska Outdoor Expo may learn outdoor skills that could be used all summer, not to mention a lifetime.

An individual, child or family may learn, for the first time, how to bait a hook, shoot archery equipment, pitch a tent, paddle a kayak, or cook outdoors at the Expo, set for May 16 at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area (SRA). The Expo is free, open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Nebraskans of all ages, interests and experience levels are welcome.

Experts and professionals will be on hand to lead a variety of interactive demonstrations and workshops, and teach an array of skills. The knowledge and skills gained may lead to increased outdoor recreation and a better appreciation for natural resources. Lifelong hobbies and outdoor family traditions also may result from a day at the Expo.

Other Expo activities will include river boat rides, hunting and fishing clinics, a slingshot range, displays of big, small and upland game animals and birds, and live snakes and raptors.

One event intended to entice visitors to try new activities is the Nebraska Outdoor Challenge. Participants may win prizes.

Entry into a state parkland such as Fort Kearny normally would require a park entry permit for each vehicle. However, May 16 also is Free Fishing and Park Entry Day in Nebraska. No park entry or fishing permit is required on that day only.

Fort Kearny SRA has eight lakes that will offer on-the-water experiences for anyone interested in kayaking, dog training and fishing.

Visitors also will be able to learn about the 2009 Great Park Pursuit outdoor adventure program. Like the Expo, the Pursuit encourages families to spend time outdoors and take advantage of the state's natural resources.

To get to Fort Kearny SRA from Interstate 80, take Exit 279 (Minden), then travel south on Nebraska Highway 10 for 3 miles. Turn west and travel for 3 miles on Nebraska Highway 50A to Fort Kearny State Historical Park (SHP). The SRA is a mile east and a mile north of the SHP.

For more information on the Expo, go to nebraskaoutdoorsexpo.org.

Rather than driving by the Ft. Kearny SRA to the SHP, turn west and travel for TWO miles and turn North at the Ft. Kearny SRA sign!

Thanx for the post, Bumpus. Please don't BITE ME for my adjustment to your posted News Release!
