Default 2008 State High School Silhouette Championships Draws 60 Young Shooters

NGPC news release, 9/29/08:

BROKEN BOW, Neb. – Sixty young Nebraska shooters participated in the 2008 State High School Silhouette Championships held at the Pressey Wildlife Management Area south of Broken Bow on Sept. 27, according to Mike Streeter, hunter education coordinator for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Mariah Kenney of Beemer is the 2008 state champion with a score of 35 out of 40; Grace Moore of Inman was high girl shooter score of 25 out of 40; and Kelly Troester of Marsland was the high boy shooter score of 33 out of 40.

Silhouette .22 rifle shooting is fired at small metal targets that fall when hit. During the match each competitor fires 40 shots, 10 shots each at 43, 66, 72 and 109 yards, shooting from a standing, or off-hand, shooting position.

"Shooting sports such as the high school silhouette championship in the fall and the Cornhusker Trap Shoot held each spring at Doniphan are lifetime sports that participants can enjoy for many years," Streeter said. "Equipment requirements for the Pressey championship are very simple. Any .22 rifle, with or without a scope, and a box of .22 ammunition is all that is required."

The annual Pressey silhouette shoot is sponsored by the Commission, the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation, Hornady Manufacturing of Grand Island and the Pony Express Ramrodders Club of Gothenburg.

According to Streeter, the Pressey shoot is open to all Nebraska Hunter Education graduates who are at least 12 years of age and in grades 7 through 12. Shooters may compete as individuals and awards also are provided for high school, junior high school, open teams and 4-H teams of four shooters.

For more information on the Pressey shoot or the Cornhusker Trap Shoot, contact Streeter at (402) 471-6134 or mike.streeter@nebraska.gov.
