NGPC news release, 9/29/08:
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The final living history event at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park (SHP) for the 2008 season will be Oct. 4 and 5, as volunteers portray life as it was at the 1820s era military post. Demonstrations of period trades such as carpentry, coopering and blacksmithing will be presented 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. Jeff Barnes, author of the book “Forts of the Northern Plains,” will present a program in the Harold W. Anderson Visitor Center theater at 1:30 p.m. Sunday on forts that were in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area and will be available to sign copies of his book. Fort Atkinson SHP is located seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 in Fort Calhoun. There is no entrance fee, but each vehicle is required to have a state park entry permit. Park permits are sold at the visitor’s center. Daily permits are $4.35, annual permits are $20.35, and duplicate annual permits are $10.35. All prices include the issuing fee.
