NGPC news release, 9/23/08:
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No Child Left Inside Act (NCLIA) (H.R. 3036) recently passed by the U.S. House of Representatives may help provide much needed funding for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commissions Hunter/Angler Recruitment, Development and Retention Plan (RDR) and other efforts aimed at influencing youth in the importance of nature and helping them develop an interest in outdoor activities. “We want to get more kids interested in the outdoors,” says Commission Assistant Administrator Kirk Nelson. “We are working to develop programs that will help get kids off the couch, away from in front of the television set and video games, and introduce them to animals, plants and outdoor activities. In addition to learning about nature, the environment and ecosystems, we want them to become involved in outdoor activities. From a health standpoint, it has been shown that kids that are active outdoors are healthier than those who aren't.” NCLIA would extend the National Environmental Education Act through fiscal 2009, funding it at $14 million. It would also use separate funds to establish a national capacity environmental education grant program, which would allow the secretary of Education to award competitive grants to state and local education agencies and to nonprofits for environmental education programs. A companion bill in the Senate, S, 1981, was introduced in July, 2007, but no action has been taken. The Commission's RDR Plan is a 20-year effort to ensure the proper place of the state's outdoor heritage. The plan is designed to implement education, marketing, access and research strategies that will ultimately help the Commission recruit youth, new and relapsed adult hunters and anglers, while retaining current participants. It will also support of hunting and fishing by all Nebraskans.

I like to boast that I was the product of parents who worshiped the outdoors, and refused to own a TV....Until I remember that my grandparents lived next door and I never missed Monday Night Baseball or Monday Night Football.
