NGPC news release, 9/23/08:
LINCOLN, Neb. – If you are interested in duck hunting, deer hunting, fly-fishing, fall color, or a variety of nonconsumptive activities available to state park visitors, you will enjoy reading the October issue of NEBRASKAland Magazine. Waterfowl hunting is an important part of the lives of three generations of the Larry and Patricia Golden family of North Platte, who own a prime waterfowl hunting spot between the North Platte and South Platte rivers. In “Planting the Seed,” Regional Editor Rocky Hoffmann tells how that family is helping to introduce others to the hunting tradition. Many people say that fall is their favorite season of the year, and in “Fall Color, Natures Best Palette” Associate Editor Jeff Kurrus shows you why. A series of photos taken from trails, roads and in the air depict the many faces of autumn in Nebraska. If you have always thought that some day youd like to go deer hunting but for one reason or another you just have never gotten around to it, Regional Editor Eric Fowlers “Deer Hunting 101" will give you all of the information you need to make this the year you take a deer. Fowler talks about several aspects of the hunting experience, such as equipment, hunting basics and shot placement. He suggests some places to hunt, and explains the advantages and disadvantages of hunting from a tree stand and a ground blind. He also explains the differences between whitetails and mule deer and gives suggestions for hunting each. Sometimes overshadowed in print by stories of hunting and fishing, Nebraskas parks and recreation areas also offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy a variety of non- consumptive outdoor activities. “The Other Nebraska ... and Its Future,” by Kurrus explores some areas across the state that are ideal for activities such as hiking, biking and geocaching. “Fly-Fishing with Warren,” by Regional Editor Bob Grier describes the fly-fishing enthusiasm of Warren Sedivy of Alliance, a certified fishing instructor who has a real passion for fishing the streams, rivers and ponds in western Nebraska. Sedivy describes his equipment and the tactics he uses to catch different species. There is also an article on cooking boneless pheasant fingers, outdoor news from across the state and some short notes on leopard lilies, hobo bats, fall fishing and a tip from Dick Turpin about hunting boots. NEBRASKAland Magazine is published 10 times a year by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and is available at Commission offices and newsstands across the state or by subscription from the Commission. Subscribe by calling 1-800-NEB-LAND (632- 5263) or online at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission - NEBRASKAland Magazine.
