NGPC news release, 8/28/08:
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Treat the family to an interesting living history event Sept. 6-7 at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park (SHP) when volunteers portray the soldiers and civilians who shared experiences on the westernmost outpost of the United States. The theme of this event will be an impending inspection brought on by the lack of discipline and military bearing by most of the fort’s inhabitants. Fort Atkinson SHP is a reconstructed fort of the fur-trade era. A visit to the fort should begin at the visitor’s center, where archaeological finds and other items from the early 19th century will prepare one for the walk through the historical park. Interpretations by soldiers and crafts people, along with displays and buildings, present visitors with an experience, the quality of which can be found in only a handful of locations around the country. Visitors will be able to see trades such as blacksmithing, tinsmithing, and carpentry, as well as domestic trades such as spinning, weaving and quiltmaking. Fort Atkinson SHP is located seven blocks east of U.S. Highway 75 in Fort Calhoun. There is no entrance fee, but each vehicle is required to have a state park entry permit. Park permits are sold at the visitor’s center. Daily permits are $4.35, annual permits are $20.35, and duplicate annual permits are $10.35. All prices include the issuing fee.
