Default Nebraska August Outdoor Calendar

NGPC news release, 7/24/08:

LINCOLN, Neb. – There are a number of outdoor events and activities scheduled across Nebraska this spring. Here are some you and your family may want to attend or participate in during August.

Nebraska 2008 park entry permits are required at all state parks, state historical parks and state recreation areas. For more information about individual events, call the telephone number listed with the event. Information can also be found on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commissions Web site at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Homepage.

Aug. 1 – First day for Hunter Information Program (HIP) registration required of all resident hunters age 16 and up and all nonresidents to hunt doves, ducks, coot, geese, snipe, rail or wood****. Free registration by calling 1-877-634-8687 or online at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission - HIP Registration.

Aug. 1 – Squirrel hunting season opens statewide.

Aug. 1 – Merritt Reservoir – last day of 15th annual Nebraska Star Party at Snake River Campground, begins at dusk, weather permitting.

Aug. 2 – Niobrara State Park – Discover SCUBA, certified instructors train participants 8 years and older in park pool. Call park office for information and to register, (402) 857-3373.

Aug. 2 – Niobrara SP – buffalo cookout and entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. Reservations required for cookouts, (402) 857-3373.

Aug. 2-3 – Fort Atkinson State Historical Park – living history demonstrations, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., (402) 468-5611.

Aug. 8 – Eugene T. Mahoney SP – Nebraska Star Party – star gazing with the Omaha Astronomical Society and Prairie Astronomy Club using powerful telescopes. Event will be at the golf range from dusk-11 p.m., (402) 944-2523.

Aug. 9 – Niobrara SP – buffalo cookout and entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. Reservations required for cookouts, (402) 857-3373.

Aug. 13 – Holmes Park Lake, Lincoln – free family fishing night, 6-8 p.m. Rods, bait, tackle available for use. Those 16 years and older must have current Nebraska fishing permit.

Aug. 15 – Boyd Elk Hunting Unit – elk hunting season opens 30 minutes before sunrise.

Aug. 16 – Niobrara SP – buffalo cookout and entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. Reservations required for cookouts, (402) 857-3373.

Aug. 20 – Statewide – archery antelope hunting season opens 30 minutes before sunrise.

Aug. 23 – Niobrara SP – buffalo cookout and entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. Reservations required for cookouts, (402) 857-3373.

Aug. 26 – Halleck Park Lake in Papillion – free family fishing night, 6-8 p.m. Rods, bait, tackle available for use. Those 16 years and older must have current Nebraska fishing permit.

Aug. 27 – Holmes Park Lake, Lincoln – free family fishing night, 6-8 p.m. Rods, bait, tackle available for use. Those 16 years and older must have current Nebraska fishing permit.

Aug. 29 – Beatrice -- Nebraska Game and Parks Commission meeting, 8 a.m. at Homestead National Monument.

Aug. 30 – Niobrara SP – buffalo cookout and entertainment beginning at 6 p.m. Reservations required for cookouts. (402) 857-3373.

Aug. 30 – Fort Kearny State Historical Park – Labor Day Weekend, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Cannon firing at 2 p.m. Soldiers camp and living history, wood carving, knife making, pine needle basket weaving displays and demonstrations. (308) 865-5303.
