Default NASP State Tournament Draws 230 Young Archers

NGPC news release, 4/29/08:

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A total of 230 fourth- to 12th- grade students from 11 schools participated in the Nebraska National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament held April 26 in Lincoln, according to Aaron Hershberger Nebraska Game and Parks Commission outdoor education specialist and NASP state coordinator.

The young archers have been participating in NASP during their physical education classes in school. Awards and trophies were presented to individual students and teams in several categories. Saunders Archery provided $500 Tom Saunders Scholarships to Lisa Geckle of Mater Dei Academy in Omaha, the top scoring female high school senior, and Rapheal Erdie, also of Mater Dei Academy, the top scoring male high school senior.

The tournament was coordinated by the Commission, Nebraska State Archery Association, Lincoln Prairie Bowmen Archery Club, Golden Arrow Archery Club of Omaha and many volunteers.

“The National Archery in the Schools Program is very unique as a curriculum in its ability to teach not only the life skill of archery, but improve self-confidence and self-discipline in students as well,” Hersberger said.

“When you walk into a NASP Tournament and look at the participants you are amazed by the diversity of the archers taking part – from the skinny fourth grader to the big high school senior,” he said. “Everyone can take part in archery and have an absolute blast doing it. You don’t have be super tall or extremely muscular to be good at archery – it’s the reason that NASP is so popular – everyone can do it.”
