NGPC news release, 4/29/08:
LINCOLN, Neb. -- A total of 230 fourth- to 12th- grade students from 11 schools participated in the Nebraska National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament held April 26 in Lincoln, according to Aaron Hershberger Nebraska Game and Parks Commission outdoor education specialist and NASP state coordinator. The young archers have been participating in NASP during their physical education classes in school. Awards and trophies were presented to individual students and teams in several categories. Saunders Archery provided $500 Tom Saunders Scholarships to Lisa Geckle of Mater Dei Academy in Omaha, the top scoring female high school senior, and Rapheal Erdie, also of Mater Dei Academy, the top scoring male high school senior. The tournament was coordinated by the Commission, Nebraska State Archery Association, Lincoln Prairie Bowmen Archery Club, Golden Arrow Archery Club of Omaha and many volunteers. The National Archery in the Schools Program is very unique as a curriculum in its ability to teach not only the life skill of archery, but improve self-confidence and self-discipline in students as well, Hersberger said. When you walk into a NASP Tournament and look at the participants you are amazed by the diversity of the archers taking part from the skinny fourth grader to the big high school senior, he said. Everyone can take part in archery and have an absolute blast doing it. You dont have be super tall or extremely muscular to be good at archery its the reason that NASP is so popular everyone can do it. 2008 Nebraska State Tournament National Archery in the Schools RESULTS $500 Saunders Scholarship Top Score High School Senior, Female Lisa Geckle, Mater Dei Academy (Omaha) Score: 253 Male Raphael Erdie, Mater Dei Academy (Omaha) Score: 248 Top Score All Divisions, Female Samantha Griffin, North Star High School (Lincoln) Score: 268 Male Ryan Hedges, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 264 Individual Awards High School Female (Grades 9-12) , 1st Place Samantha Griffin, North Star High School (Lincoln) Score: 268 (shootout champion) 2nd Place Kassy Almanza, Northeast High School (Lincoln) Score: 268, 3rd Place Jessica Nguyen, North Star High School (Lincoln) Score:259, 4th Place Lisa Geckle, Mater Dei Academy (Omaha) Score: 253, 5th Place Victoria Hinrichs, Northeast High School (Lincoln) Score: 252, Individual Awards High School Male (Grades 912) , 1st Place Nick Hawley, Grade, Superior Jr-Sr High (Superior) Score: 262, 2nd Place Davis Lawson, North Star High School (Lincoln) Score: 259, 3rd Place John Watters, Northeast High School (Lincoln) Score: 258, 4th Place Clint Shroyer, Superior Jr-Sr High (Superior) Score: 251, 5th Place Raphael Erdie, Mater Dei Academy (Omaha) Score: 248, Individual Awards Middle School Female (Grades 78) , 1st Place Alyse Hunt, Sacred Heart/St. Patricks (Lincoln) Score: 256, 2nd Place Sarah Petrzilka, Sacred Heart/St. Patricks (Lincoln) Score: 244, 3rd Place Alisha Sheets, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 242, 4th Place Haley Lauterbach, Pound Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 228, 5th Place Elizabeth Mami, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 224, Individual Awards Middle School Male (Grades 7-8) , 1st Place Ryan Hedges, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 264, 2nd Place Jason Chau, Pound Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 254, 3rd Place Jake Graham, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 246, 4th Place Scott Luedtke, Pound Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 240, 5th Place Stephen Cantarero, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 238, Individual Awards Elementary Female (Grades 4-6) , 1st Place Tessa Raichart, Dundy County Schools (Benkelman) Score: 250, 2nd Place Sarah Dennis, Pound Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 237, 3rd Place Makenzie Hyde, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 236, 4th Place Annie Keeshan, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score:232, 5th Place Emma Jacoby, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 223, Individual Awards Elementary Male (Grades 46) 1st Place Jeff Riesenberg, Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 249, 2nd Place Mitchell Shillington, Dundy County Schools (Benkelman) Score: 244, 3rd Place Jarod Michl, North American Martyrs (Lincoln) Score: 241, 4th Place Eric DeJonge, Pound Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 235, 5th Place Aaron Balderson, Dundy County Schools (Benkelman) Score: 233, Team Awards High School Division, State Champions North Star High School (Lincoln) Score: 2,910, State Runner Up Northeast High School (Lincoln) Score: 2,819, 3rd Place Mater Dei Academy (Omaha) Score: 2,762, Team Awards Middle School Division, State Champions Dawes Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 2,838, State Runner Up Pound Middle School (Lincoln) Score: 2,713, 3rd Place Sacred Heart/St. Patricks (Lincoln) Score: 2,507, Team Awards Elementary Division (Grades 912) , State Champions Dundy County Schools (Benkelman) Score: 2,531, State Runner-Up Superior Schools (Superior) Score: 2,091, Coaches Challenge Shoot Winner: Robert Deschaine, Pound Middle School Teacher
