NGPC news release, 4/10/08:
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is again coordinating events for a statewide Take Pride In America Day,” scheduled for Saturday, May 3. In previous years, volunteers have achieved tremendous success in their efforts to improve the state’s recreation and wildlife areas by participating in the project. In 2007 volunteers worked more than 4,000 hours to benefit Nebraska’s wild and scenic lands. Take Pride in America Day is a national partnership established by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The project attracts volunteers from every corner of America to improve parks, lakes, wildlife areas, refuges, and historical sites. The program offers volunteers opportunities to improve recreation and wildlife areas in Nebraska. Volunteers from across Nebraska are needed to assist in a number of Take Pride in America events, which have been scheduled at state parks and wildlife management areas throughout Nebraska. Projects are open to individuals and families, as well as youth, businesses and community groups. Volunteers can select from activities taking place in their area and must sign a “hold-harmless” agreement before they will be allowed to work in any park. They should wear seasonal clothing and boots, and bring work gloves, snacks, water or other liquid refreshments. Sunscreen and insect spray are also recommended. Hand tools such as shovels, hammers, saws, etc. may be useful depending on the project. Possible projects include painting and repair of picnic tables and benches, trail and building maintenance, clean-up of public areas, light construction work, trimming brush, replacing and repairing signs, and landscaping. On-site coordinators will direct all activities taking place on May 5. To learn more and view a list of planned projects, volunteers may visit the Commission’s Web site at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Homepage or contact Suzanne Ridder at (402) 471- 1623 or via e-mail at suzanne.ridder@ngpc.ne.gov.
