Default Five Informative Seminars on Tap for Kearney Expo

NGPC news release, 3/20/08:

LINCOLN, Neb. – A wide array of outdoor topics will be covered by a field of entertaining and educational speakers at Nebraska Outdoors Expo 2008 in Kearney on April 19.

Camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing and predator calling will be discussed in the seminars by some of Nebraska’s top authorities.

The Expo, hosted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and presenting sponsor Cabela’s, Inc., is a celebration of the state’s rich outdoor heritage. The focus of the family-friendly event, to take place from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at the FirsTier Event Center and adjacent Kea Lake, is a wide variety of hands-on recreational and educational activities for all ages and skill levels.

All seminars will be held at the event center. The seminars are:

Predator Calling – Jeff Rawlinson, assistant administrator in the Commission’s Information and Education Division who has more than 20 years of experience calling predators, will speak at 9 a.m. He will present the basics of calling coyote, bobcat, fox, crows and raccoons in Nebraska.
Learn how to use various mouth calls, electronic calls, and decoys.

Blackpowder Hunting – Outdoor educator Rick Windham, a biologist by degree, will conduct seminars at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The outdoor writer/photographer and radio show host will cover equipment needed to hunt big game with a muzzleloader, including ignition systems, scopes, and tricks of the trade. Learn how to master these primitive, yet innovative, firearms.

Tips for Fishing Nebraska’s Lakes, Rivers and Streams – Randy Wilson of Cabela’s, an angler for 50 years, will speak at 11 a.m. and noon. Wilson, who has a degree in aquatic education, has been a product specialist for Cabela’s for 18 years. He has fished extensively in Canada, Florida, Colorado, South Dakota, New Mexico and Texas.

Canoeing – The Commission’s Greg Wagner and Ralph Wall will conduct canoeing question-and-answer sessions at 2:15 p.m. and 5 p.m., covering safety, techniques, and locations for canoeing. Wagner, manager of the Commission’s Omaha office, and Wall, a broadcast specialist, are seen on television and heard on radio, spreading the message of the state’s fantastic outdoor recreation opportunities.

The Basics of Camping – Jarrett Buresh of Cabela’s will conduct seminars at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. The department manager in the Kearney Cabela’s store has seven years of experience with Cabela’s and 15 years of camping experience throughout Nebraska. He will cover all topics relating to camping and equipment.

The Expo, in its second year, will allow participants to shoot shotguns at clay targets, fling arrows at 3-D archery targets, shoot air rifles, see hunting dogs in action, fish and learn fishing secrets from experts, participate in various fish and wildlife studies, and have close encounters with Nebraska wildlife.
