NGPC news release, 3/20/08:
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will conduct prescribed burns on wildlife management areas (WMA) in six counties in the north-central part of the state when conditions are favorable between March 24 - May 15, according to wildlife biologist Mark Feeney. The areas where burns are scheduled are: Brown County – Plum Creek Valley WMA near Johnstown. Custer County – Pressey WMA near Oconto. Howard County – Leonard Koziol WMA near St. Paul; Marsh Wren WMA near Elba; Loup Bottoms WMA near Cotesfield. Loup County – Myrtle Hall WMA near Taylor, Calamus Reservoir WMA near Burwell. Sherman County – Sherman Reservoir WMA near Loup City. Valley County – Davis Creek WMA near North Loup. Controlled burning is used to enhance vegetation for wildlife nesting, loafing, and brood rearing cover. It also helps reduce woody invasion into the habitat.
