NGPC news release, 3/20/08:
LINCOLN, Neb. – Several prescribed burns are scheduled for the southeast part of the state this spring, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The Commission will conduct burns in several wildlife management areas (WMA) and state recreation areas (SRA) during March, April and May, when weather conditions are favorable. Burning is used to stimulate the growth of grasses, to favor the growth of certain grass species over others, and to curtail the invasion of trees and shrubs. It promotes the growth of forbs, which in turn produce more insects – an important food source for upland game bird chicks. Burning improves the quality of grassland habitat and the production of certain wildlife species. The following areas are scheduled for prescribed burns: Lancaster County – Branched Oak, Wildwood, and Yankee Hill WMAs, Olive Creek, Pawnee and Wagon Train SRAs Saunders County – Larkspur and Bramble WMAs Johnson County – Osage North, Osage Southwest, Twin Oaks, and Hickory Ridge WMAs Pawnee County – Taylor’s Branch, Table Rock, Burchard, and Pawnee Prairie WMAs Richardson County – South Fork and Margrave WMAs Gage County – Arrowhead and Diamond Lake WMAs Nemaha County – Peru Bottoms, Langdon Bend and Kansas Bend WMAs Seward County – Twin Lakes and Bur Oak WMAs
