and I ask thee to fulfill me with thy knowledge
![]() ![]() I have NO understanding of how to create a pond. I do not plan on doing this anytime soon, but I would love to have preliminary knowledge on it so when it does come time, I am locked an loaded. So this is basically what I know, I know that to have a pond you need an adequate watershed. How to tap that watershed I do not know. Do you have to actually dig for a pond near a creek, and then dam that creek, or can you find an area encompassed by hills and dam a creek into it. By the way I do not know how to dam a creek ![]() . I know my knowledge is very basic and that is why I need you guys to help me out.

"Dugouts" or "dams" are both legitimate ways of building a pond. When building a pond typically all of the top soil needs to be removed down to the clay layer. If a dam is being built then a core trench needs to be made and layers of clay need to be packed on the dam and around the spillway structure to prevent leaks. There are lots of options and the Nebraska Pond Management book does a great job of going over them. ![]()

Definitely read cover to cover that NE Pond Management guide. I've read it about 5 times and still think I know very little about what it really takes to get a pond going and keep it going. Next, sign up to PondBoss.com and READ. READ READ READ. The knowledge of the members on that site is incredible and it will blow you away. They have crucial literature as well, including their bi-monthly magazine you must subscribe to if you're serious about being a pondmeister. I have learned so much in the past year I wouldn't even know where to begin, but I don't think I've even scratched the surface of what I need to know to make sure my little slice of heaven reaches its potential.
To summarize....READ. ![]() |
