Hey guess I got a lotta time to go to even think about starting a pond but i was just wondering what are the basic steps to it?
the first would be clearing the land right? and the final would be stocking the fish, but what goes in between?

There are a lot of variables and in the early going, you have more questions to answer than anyone else. How big, what kind of pond, location, etc. So, for starters, go ahead and answer those questions and we'll proceed from there.

The first thing that I would do is call the NRD or the SCS. I'm not sure if they have the money anymore to help out with the cost, but I would think that they will still help you plan things. They'll help you with the proposed size based on watershed area etc.
Then go here Pond Boss Magazine Home Page!. Click on the link that says "ask the boss" on the left side. This is the discussion board. You will realize how much you don't know, but the people there are always glad to help. |

Get a plan together for what you think you want to do, take it to NRCS see if they would be willing to look at the site to help you with engineering/cost share. NRCS (formerly SCS) will be able to say yes it will work or no it won't, the next step is finding funding...if they can't maybe the NRD will be able to. Let that process play-out...it may take a while though. Its hard to get a pond/dam built anymore under 2 or 3 years.
Next thing I would say is, GO TALK TO THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS! before doing anything on your own. They are clamping-down big-time on violations to the Clean Water Act. Things you think aren't wetland or jurisdictional waters of the US probably are! They will want you to fill-out a permit and provide detailed info on dirt work, fill material, excavation and how many wetland acres you are destroying. The next step is NDEQ to find-out if you need a permit from them. Sounds like over-kill, but believe me its well worth it...fines and wetland mitigation are expensive . Now we know why it takes so long....there's way more that goes into it too. Google Nebraska NRCS for info on the field office near you. |

Read the NGPC Pond Management book, there is a lot of good advice to get you started. The size of the pond you can build depends on the rainfall in your area the amount of drainage going into the pond you plan to build. Not enough drainage into a big pond then it might be hard to keep full, too much drainage into a small pond and it runs a high risk of erosion and silting in sooner.
Here is a link to the NGPC online Pond Management handbook. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission - Pond Management http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/fishing/...ndchapter1.pdf
