I figured this is the best place to get advice on this. I've been building a garden pond in my backyard the last couple years. It finally to the point where I can put fish in. Since I'm pretty sure koi prices are going to go up a ton this year I thought about putting natives in it. The pond is about 12'x12x2' with a decent sized area 3' deep. This isn't exactly the scale you guys are use to, but is there any reason I can't put any BG or RES in there. Is there any other fish you think would work. I'm pretty sure a LMB would wipe everything out. Is there any hatcheries you would suggest around Lincoln. I found the list on this site, but I don't know who would work with this small scale.

I think some of the local hatcheries would work with you on small quantities if you are willing to pick up the fish. If you are going with BG you might want try and get some 6" or better in size and try to get all males to limit reproduction in your garden pond. Send Aquaman a PM, he might be able to help you.

I would caution against BG if you intend to introduce koi later and want them to reproduce. BG are pretty good little egg eaters! My parents have a stellar pond, and for awhile they let koi and BG co-exist, but recently we drained it for a cleaning and saved the koi and used the BG as bait for 'coon traps! The BG are fun to watch though, they really go after insects on the surface.

Orscheln Farm supply is having their fish sale and you can buy as little as 25. I am not sure about the one in Lincoln but I picked up the Brochure from the Beatrice one yesterday. They have Red ears, Hybrid BG, LMB, CC, and Crappies. Prices running in the $.55 ea range give or take, crappies are in the $.80 ea range.

Look into Comet Goldfish and Shubunkin. Not sure if anyone in the Lincoln area would have them though.
