I have heard that during the hot summer months a 1/2" per day of evaporation is posssible.

Shorty is right. 1/2 inch each day in the summer is a standard.
I believe that in Nebraska there is what's called a "net evaporation" rate of 20 inches annually, which is 48 inches evaporation, minus 28 inches precipitation. Anything beyond that is seepage.
