My brother's pond has a creek next to it that flooded and overflowed into it. He has since built up a dike to keep this from happening again. He has now noticed carp, buffalo and other rough fish swimming in the pond.
What would be the best way to get rid of these? Would electro-shocking be a possibility? (Picking up the stunned rough fish while they're on the surface, and discarding) He really does not want to go the rotenone route, and start over. Pond is about 5 acres, 12 feet deep, and also has bluegills, catfish, crappies and bass. Thanks for any advice. |

An invite to many of the forum bow-fishermen would do wonders....

Yep, once they're there, they're there to stay unless you start over from scratch. He can probably "manage" them though, and predators are an important part of that.
A few other ideas: Trap them (build and submerge a fish trap, and return desirable fish to the water, removing the undesirable fish) Seine them (a large seine may help remove many fish) Catch them with setlines or trotlines baited with corn (may also catch some desirable species, which can be released) Invite some bowfishers to help thin the population Cast net them (may have limited success, but will get some yoty fish Spear them through the ice, over a chum pile (corn) It's all just "maintenance" unless he wants to do a drain and restart or rotenone.

I worked for as a fisheries tech for 3 years, the only way to rid a pond of the trash fish is rotenone. Electro-fishing it is just a feel good action and seining or trapping isn't going to get all of the trash fish either.
I would rotenone and start over. |
