We'll see. Have to talk to my grandpa about letting me borrow his browning semiauto shotgun. Later

the first year i bought a turkey tag i called a tom in. as far as calling i practiced all the time i had a call in my mouth a couple hours every night and when watching the turkey hunting shows or dvd's tried to replicate the calls the pros made. one trick i learned from them is if you get a tom hung up outside range throw your calls over your far shoulder so he thinks the hen is leaving. draws em right in everytime.(everytime i have tried)

Thanks guys, Good stuff there.

I got a couple mouth calls the other day as well as a glass friction call.

(H.S. double glass )

Walmart has a nice selection.

The mouth calls don't work so good for me. I have a couple of teeth gone from one side of my mouth and this seems to be screwing up using the mouth calls for me.

(we'll pause for a moment for those who wish to insert their own joke here)

I went out for a bit trying to call in a coyote this weekend (with no success and while I was out), I listened for turkeys and really didn't hear much in the way of turkeys. Probably scaring away coyotes and turkeys with my coyote calls!

I had some turkey hunting DVD's and a CD so I've been practicing with those the last couple of evenings.

The friction call is so much easier to use, for me. I'm confident I'll be able to do some decent calling once the season opens with this call.

I've gotten better at making impressive sounds with the mouth calls, they're just not turkey sounds! So I've about given up on those.

An added bonus with the mouth calls, if you can make a squeal noise with it you should be able to call in some curious coyotes, just thought!

A ton of excellent advice and ideas mentioned by other members here! Great info!!

When I first decided to hunt toms, started reading everything could get hands on. Bought tapes and three different kinds of calls, but ended up using box call most times. Bought camo, masks and all. I was hooked before ever starting to hunt!

Didn't take long to hook up with my uncle and his lifetime hunting buddy who taught me the total ins and outs! They taught me the calls, patience, where to set up, being still and the thrill of calling one in! Hunted on the edge of hardwoods where they were roostin or where they traveled later in the afternoon or how they normally behaved during mid day, sat next to trees, or cedars and thoroughly enjoyed sitting in deer stand if one was available and now since older enjoy huntng from a tent blind (hard to sit totally still now). Every hunt is always new, challenging and I am as excited as the first time ever hunted them! Patience and keeping focused and enjoying the thrill of the hunt always been my highlights. It was the old timers (uncle and his buddy) who really taught me how to call and enjoy the experience. Don't be afraid to ask some of the old guys as they will feel privileged you asked them!! And they might even take you out and teach ya if you ask for most oldtimers want to hand down their skills to younger hunters who are truely interested and take the time to listen and learn!
