Question Shooting birds on the water...

How do you feel about it? Right? Wrong? Fun? Not fun? Do you think it's better if you decoyed 'em down first vs. just finding them on the water?

Not judging or attacking anyone here, I'm just curious what everyone thinks...

Keep replies friendly.

Any legal method that avoids cripples getting away is ethical in my book!

that's a heck of a question to ask, Chad. For a guy who lynches his ducks.

I'm just sayin... !!

I will let them take flight before I shoot.

Have had to wave or yell at a few to get them flying and dont see anything wrong with that.

But to swat them on the sit would do nothing for me.

Some folks are REAL hungery for meat I guess...

Now if its a cripple that is a different story.

Nothing wrong with it in my book. Heck I will occassionally keep a wiper to fry up. So to Arkansas a duck is no big deal.

Depending on the size of the flock and the number of shooters I try and take them about 5' above the water when they are backflapping on the way down.

If it is a large flock or if I have some novice or young hunters with me I might let the first half of flock land.

I think that it takes away from some of the "rush" when you land the birds and then shoot them on way up.

I do agreee that landing birds is the true test of a hunters skill but I have never liked shooting at them after they landed.

A lot of times if a bird lands in my spread I consider give it a free pass and dont shoot it.

For everyone saying that they don't do it, how many of you have jumped snow geese?

Just curious and to derail the thread for a moment. How many would spank a rooster running down a corn roll? or a rabbit out of plum thicket, or a squirrel in a tree?

I think I'd rather see someone shoot them on the water assuring a good quick kill then someone sky busting at 60 yards and seeing some wangers flying away.

Rabbits don't fly?? Man,I've hunted rabbits before and never bagged one cause I waited for them to take flight first.

Other than the size shot you're using and angle you're pointing the gun, how is shooting a duck off the water different than shooting a dove off a power line?

I agree with south of 41. Scare 'em up and knock 'em down. To say I've never Arkansas'd a bird would be a lie. But certain situations call for certain measures such as the situation Keith S. pointed out.

Hey Keith, met your new neighbors yet? That house is HUGE!!!

If I only go hunting once in a while? Bang Bang. If I can choose to be picky, then I would probably wait for the more exciting shot.

OBG,
Shooting a dove off a powerline or anything for that matter is illegal.
