Moving the rifle season due to peak rut? I think I would like to have a rifle season during the pre rut. The bigger bucks during the peak of the rut alot of time bed up for a few days with hot does. hunting that period where the bucks are locked down really sucks. I feel that during the pre rut the bucks can be patterned easier. They are still moving since they are chasing pretty heavy. So I don't think much is being missed by not being able to hunt the peak of the rut with a bow. Let's trade! Bow hunting season is now 10 days during the peak of the rut and rifle season now runs for 3.5 months! Fair??

i hunt in areas different than where i live. i have hunted in missouri, in northeast and south central nebraska. it has been my experience that most of the hunters that are from big cities are the ones respecting the rules and laws of hunting and that a few locals and a few cityfolk ruin things for the rest of us by being the idiot you are talking about. and if someone is gonna take a shortcut with a rifle they will look for a shortcut with a shotgun too.

I agree with everyone here. Why make the people who are respecting the laws suffer? I think they should make penalties harsher for those idiots that break the law.

Nah, it is all non-residents. Everyone is a poacher and a lawbreaker.

I just think it is ridiculous that bowhunters can't hunt during those 10 days, and the reasons are even more ridiculous. But, I'm happy to get the days I have archery hunting and this gives me 10 days of taking someone else out who either does not have a place to hunt or is new to hunting. This year I'm priveledged to be taking to forum members out rifle hunting. I'll enjoy every bit as much having them tag a deer as I. So basically, I don't see things changing and I'm okay with it. It could be worse, I could have been born on the east coast and eating only green stuff now.

I personally don't mind the break for rifle season. I'm 15 so I buy the youth permits, which permit you to use the tag for any of the three seasons bow, rifle, muzzleloader, and I find it more relaxing to use that 10 days of rifle hunting after all the frustrations of archery hunting.

WOW hot topic, many opinions! I didn't think that I was going to strike such a nerve, I understand out west that shotgunning would be a poor choice, I am talking about the more populated counties, or zoning areas around towns as "shotgun/archery" only. Guess I should have been more specific. Lets keep it going, so far lots of good info!

Also, it would be nice to see more archery areas around bigger towns. Let it run through the rut without the rifle break.

yeah, lets only hunt deer with shotguns. that way the two rifles i have for deer hunting can sit..........why punish the rest of the normal hunters because of a few road hunters. this topic has been beat to death.

I think the problem is there are more than a few road hunters lately. A shot gun season won't cure it though. I think more access is the key. Hell, in a lot of instances it is cheaper to go poach a deer than pay for a spot to hunt.

Like I stated before, have shotgun only units/limited shotgun areas around populated areas. I dont want this to get ugly, just a good debate on the positives and negatives on both sides of the spectrum.

With the population growing, I can see something happening down the line for counties like Douglas or Sarpy. But that still may be a ways off.

As for shotgun being safer then a rifle. When was the last time anyone heard of someone shot with a high power rifle, and they were more then 40 or 50 yards from the person doing the shooting. A long range accident is possible, but 99% of high power rifle shooting accidents are well within shotgun range. For me that's why a change won't make much difference, as long as we're talking safety.

I just think that anytime you give something up, you'll have a hell of a time to ever get it back. I think people should do like Ted says. Respect that others may hunt in a different way then you, as long as it's leagal, you shouldn't bash them. Legal hunters should realize that we are all in this together and should stay together for the benifit of ALL of us reguardless of what LEGAL way you chose to harvest your game!!

Bash, no, but agree with not always either. Although you see that a lot more on the fishing side I would think. But, just b/c it is legal doesn't always make it right. Otherwise I think I agree with what you're saying.
