I was at the archery range by Cunningham Lake yesterday and some fellow told me that you do not have to take your tree stand down everyday after hunting as was earlier planned. Does anyone know anything about this, is it true? I was hoping that the new rule would stand, I guess we will have to put up with two or three people tying up 20 good hunting spots over there again..........JIM

yea i was out there scouting and read on the signs out there that you couldnt put any permnant stands up only climbers and such, but in the omaha world herald a last sunday there was an article saying they could change it but i havent heard anything more about it. ive hunted there for a couple of years and have always been alittle ticked when you see that many stands in a small area. i usually hunted the corn feilds on the ground and have taken some good does, but have seen some monster bucks out of there to.oh and jim i also really enjoy praticing down there at cunningham

I too hoped the stand rule would stick. At the meeting they made it seem like there wasn't much they could do about it, but i guess enough people were against the rule.

A friend of mine was there today installing a stand. He told me that this is the last year for leaving your stand up. What I was told and don't know for sure.

This will be the last year unless people STOP putting up several stands up to "block an area". I can not imagine pulling a stand every night. Just like everything else, a few bad apples.

Do you think a public spot within 30minutes of 500,000 people is gonna be uncrowded?? Your best bet will be during the week as you stated but I'm guessing there will be some folks even then.

cinman:
There are quite a few stands over there and it can get crowded on weekends and holidays but you can still tag a nice buck even on the crowded days. In fact a couple years ago I went over on a Sunday I believe it was Oct 3rd and hunted early morning. A hunter walked by my stand and about 10 minutes later a herd of about 5 or 6 nice bucks came running from his direction straight toward me, I could hear them long before they got in front of my stand so I had my bow ready to go. They all blew by me except one stopped ten yards from my stand he now resides on my basement wall a very nice eight point I must say. Sometime the other hunters can be an asset and most of the time someone will always volunteer to help you tote the deer out should you get one. There are some very nice people who hunt at DeSoto and I think you should give it a try. If solitude is what your after go during the week many many times my truck is the only one in the parking lot during the week. If you see a black Chevy Silverado pickup over there with 29 county license plates say hi its me. Oh and if you get a nice one I'll be glad to help you tote it out I have a pretty nice deer cart. Sorry for the long post.........................JIM :zbowhunti

I'll be setting up a stand this weekend for the mz doe season. Are people decent about leaving other's property alone or do I need to take some steps to "secure" my stand to the tree? Thanks!

I also hunt out there. Usually people will leave your stuff alone, but i have had a bad experience before. Last year we were unable to pick out stands up on the 31st so we asked if we could pick them up the next day and they said that would be fine. Well we got out there and 2 of the 3 stands that my dad and i had up had gotten stolen. Other than that one time and a not so friendly confrontation with a couple of guys who didn't want me hunting in "their" area, everything has been a pleasant experience.

Public land, first come first serve, they cant hunt every stand at once anyway. Putting up a stand does not reserve the spot!

No but it makes it kind of uncomfortable.

I have hunted public land for 21 years, I've seen it all, stolen stands to stands hung two trees away and countless people sitting in my stands. If they use 'em when I aint there fine, cant complain, I've even told people they could use them unless I show up to hunt it and never had a problem with that. I certainly am not suggesting that people go out and sit in the first unoccupied stand they find, but if some people are rude enough to set up all them stands and only hunt one or two screw 'em the rest are fair game for everyone else. Use it or take it down. I remember when Gifford farm only allowed two stands per hunter and you had to put a color coded sticker on each one with you access permit number AND there was an 80 yard rule, no stands within 80 yards of another, perhaps Desoto could benifite from such a policy too.

im a little lost...whats wrong with hanging multiple stands on public? ive had as many as 10 stands on one public piece. different winds and different times of day require different setups. I can understand if people act as if the land is theirs, but I certainly dont see a problem with hanging multiple sets so you dont wear one out.

Not a darn thing wrong with multiple stands...........if you use 'em! dont set up 6 stands use 2 all year letting the other 4 sit empty and get upset because someone else hangs a stand nearby or uses yours, it's public they have every right you do to hunt that exact same spot if they get there before you THAT DAY. People need to show restraint on public land, you should'nt hang a stand in every spot you think "it might be a good spot someday" hoping that because you have a stand there now else will show up and set up. Some people try to claim a area by hanging a bunch of stands and that is not right.
