I can only afford 1 stand, so don't have to worry about me trying to claim a spot by hanging multiples.

A couple of years back they tried to start this rule of "taking your stand down everyday". Public outcry shot it down. I guess they are trying to bring it back again?

Personal opinion, De Soto deer population is a JOKE!!! If the USFWS really wanted to control the population and get it within its proper limits they could, BUT they do not and WILL NOT persue the proper avenues to get this done.

Certainly restricting hunters to archery and muzzleloaders only isn't helping (which they started last year), and now they want to implent this stand rule again!!! This will only DECREASE hunter participation and success rate.

Its obvious to me that DE SOTO NWR DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE OVERPOPULATED DEER HERD THEY HAVE, THE DAMAGE IT IS CAUSING TO OUR PROPERTY (its public), OR THE PROBLEMS IT IS CAUSING TO SURROUNDING FARMERS!!! These archery and muzzleloader hunts are just band-aids over a severed artery.

I don't think they are bringing back the taking it down everyday, I think they are making it so you can leave it there, right? Or do I have it backwards? I hunted a refuge near the Canada border when I lived in ND and I had to pack in everything and pack out everything, icluding my stand on that refuge as well. They don't have much for trees that take a climber up there either and since you couldn't cut limbs it was too time consuming to bring in a hang on and hunt from that same climb on that day, and then take it back down, so I hunted from the ground. The work of doing it didn't bother me, but I'm clumsy and make a lot of noise so I was better off from the ground with that rule in place. I like the idea of tagging with your name and contact info. If someone has 20 hang ons for 1 person I'd not feel bad at all setting up in a tree next to his stand. Only thing I can control is myself. So on public I'm as courteous as I can be and make the best of what I have. Looks like this year I'll be only on public since I just moved to Omaha. I haven't gotten a yes yet on asking. I don't know enough about the places around here to comment on deer populations though. I have yet to see if there is any population at all on the places I've checked out.

I guess this thought process never crossed my mind. It makes sense. Personally, if I hung 1 or 20 stands on public I wouldnt be that upset if someone sat in one as long as they didnt damage it. But I can assure you if I went to a stand well before shooting time and someone was in it, theyd be either getting down, or the stand would be coming down with them in it.

I know there is a lot of deer on these properties, but I think it would be very difficult for a rifle season of any sort to take place. How many guns are you gonna let in? That place is flat as a pancake, and with the advent of the high powers now on ML's we essentially do have a rifle season in there anyways.

I have hunted Desoto a couple of times, I think it is a great place to take a deer, with that said I do see a lot of people hanging multiple stands and to that I say it is public property and thank you for hanging a stand for me!!! You can use any stand on public Property! Now if there is a stand that is all alone and someone might be coming to hunt that stand, I try to stay clear of that area, but when someone puts up multiple stands just to try and keep people from hunting the area, then I am more than happy to sit in one of their stands!

I also agree with Elkstaker, the deep population is out of hand!

I've hunted De Soto for the last 8 years. I don't know how you could be out there in the hunting areas scouting as those areas are closed until October 1st. No stands can be set for the archery season until that date. As for the muzzleloader season the weekend prior to your season is when you can scout and set up stands. If your sneaking out prior, that could be a reason the Fish and Wildlife wanted to set restrictions.

Had that same thought.
