hey everyone dont know how i got so lucky but a friend of my wifes has a yellow lab and a black lab well they had some pups so now i got free or charge a 100% lab. she is about 3 months old and adorable. I want to raise this girl properly and be able to enjoy her company out in the field while hunting. I hunt mainly waterfowl so what do i need to do to get this girl ready to go into the field maybe this season? or is that too soon?

Get a book and read it.
But the big thing is TIME, TIME, TIME spent with the dog.

I'm no expert, but at 3 months I would only do about two things - come (on a rope and only for very short times) and fetch... lots of fetch. Just have fun and establish the relationship. When she's ready, work in whoa. Duck dogs don't need to do much. Sit still for long periods (whoa), and bring back dead birds (fetch).

3 months is a little young. Spend lots of time with it and reward it GREATLY when it does something you want it to.
Now I wouldnt do a lot of fetch with it. Just keep the sessions short and sweet and tons of praise and you will get a great dog. Your best bet is to find a local retriever club and start hanging out with those guys. They will be great help and they mostly train for waterfowl situations anyway. We have one here in Norfolk called the Elkhorn Valley Hunting Retriever Club. There is also one in Lincoln.

You might find Game Dog to be an interesting read. Congrats on the new pup.

Little tricks ...
My dog loved "spit snacks" so I didn't have to use treats.

I think Ty hit it right one with what to do. 3 month old pups don't have much for attention spans. My only trick is don't let a puppy do things you don't want it to do later on when it gets older. It is much easier to teach the pup not to do something then to let it slide when it is a "cute puppy". Then you have to try and reteach a dog with bad habits.... Enjoy, dogs are the best.
