Road kill

If you see a turkey get hit by a car, or if you hit one yourself. Do you need a tag of somekind to harvest it? Is deer the same as well? Just got the old Ranger tuned up and feelin' frisky! Kidding!

I believe in the case of a deer, you can be issued a permit to possess a road killed deer by any law enforcement agent.

I would call your local CO or sheriff if you have specific questions about this.

i thought u need a salvage permit.....ive also heard that if you possess a tag..like a bow tag...that u have to use that tag first...just rumor though...not sure if theres any credibility to that

I don't know about the meat, but since I started fly tying in January, I've been looking at road kill in a whole new light. Can you legally salvage the fur? (Except skunks; this must have been a really bad week for skunks.)

Have you guys priced feathers and fur in the fly-tying departments? Wow! A fella with some sharp rose bush clippers in the glove box could retire just on the dead deer tails he sees in the road ditches.

I smack one with my truck a few years ago on the way home from rifle hunting and they gave me a salvage tag. So no you are not required to fill a hunting tag.

Just throw it in the bucket in the back of the truck along with the possums, coons, and squirrels. Take em home and have Jethro bbq em and then have a feast on the fancy eatin table

Boy hit one three summer ago near Platte River State Park with our old 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix. Took out all four headlights and broke the fiberglass grill/hook point piece. When I asked the boy what happened to the turkey, said it knocked the bird into the north ditch. When he went to find it the bird jumped up, shook a couple times, looked back at the car and the last he saw it he was flying to the north towards the Platte River. They've got my respect...

I here ya. I've thought about this, and a few things come to mind. First off, you can tie quite a bit of flies off of small piece of fur. But, if you start tying bass bugs and big streamers, you can rip through fur and feathers pretty quickly.

I like the fact that when you buy it, it is tanned leather and keeps forever. I know you can treat it yourself, but it's just not the same to me!

Another thing, with deer hair, you actually have to take it at the proper time of year, in the correct region. In other words, winter time, thick fur which is hollow and more buoyant. I've tried some local deer hair, and it's just not the same. Doesn't flare out as well either. I'm sure you could come across some good stuff, but I don't waste my time at this point!

The same goes for feathers. I obviously use my own pheasant tail feathers, and quail have some soft hackle that makes a great alternative to partridge hackle. My dog produces some of the best black, white, and tan dubbing around. But to get some good dry fly hackle, you have to spend the money on a bird bred strictly for the purpose. Kind of a bummer, but true.

Reminds me of a Gierach story where he tried to raise his own birds for fly tying. Pretty funny...
