Have not heard one way or another on this one. I have a Thompson Center Omega in Stainless and love it easy to clean and was right on straight out of the box.

Which ever you buy, buy the Triple Seven Magnum powder pellets, much easier on cleaning compared to Pyrodex.

Christmas present for Brandon or you?

probably birthday present for Brandon. He wants to deer hunt and I sold my muzzleloader and deer rifle last year. I can't justify getting another rifle cause of the way overcrowded(IMO) 9 day deer season and the fact you can use a muzzleloader during rifle season(if he chose to hunt then) anyway.

Alex, I have never hunted with the Optima but sold quite a few when I worked for Dub’s here in Kearney. There is not really much to these guns. As stated above they are very easy to clean especially if using the Triple 7 pellets. The only problems I recall seeing were usually related to lack of cleaning after use. Use breech plug lube after cleaning, that will save a headache or two. The only other complaint I recall was about the sights. The fiber optic fibers (both front & rear) become extremely brittle in the cold and really easy to break. At the time (2-3 years ago) there were no replacement fibers available, so the only option was to by the replacement sight kit for $30 or so. Hope this helps.

I found a Knight Revolution II on closeout at Scheels several months ago and that was a smoking deal literally! So maybe you might find a good close out gun someplace. I mounted the Cabela's Powderhorn scope on it and it is dead on at 200 yards and for $100 the scope is a heck of a deal, very comparable to the Nikon Omega, except a lot cheaper! Like others have said get the triple seven pellets, you only need two 50 grain pellets (you can use 3 pellets, but most of the third pellet does not even burn up so you are wasting powder), the best sabot to get is the Hornady low drag sabots...I was shooting 1 inch groups at a 100 yards with these things, stay away from powerbelts...yes they load easy, but they do not group well.

What slimdog says about the sights is true. A guy I hunt with has the Nickel version and loves it now that powered scopes are legal. His issue with the sights began on his first day of hunting when both sights broke off.

I've got a CVA Optima Pro which is a very similiar gun. I've had it for 4years now and use open sites. I have really liked the gun for simplicity along with the price too. It is a bit heavy but I like how it 'pulled up' when I would get on target.

It's shot a lot of deer and I don't have any regrets with buying it. Nowadays since POWERED scopes are allowed I think I've thought about going with an omega with a nikon scope.

Like what was said before you HAVE to clean it after you use it!

Edited: btw if your in omaha and wanted to give it a try drop me a PM

Just my 2 cents, if you can get a TC for about the same money or a few extra bucks it's money well spent... I've always liked CVA but this writeup was enough to turn me off them...

Dangerous Muzzleloaders

T/C Barrels are made in USA and the best there are in my humble opinion...

i've owned a couple different CVA muzzleloaders (i currently own their entry-level break action, the Wolf -- the Optima's "little brother"), and have been very happy with them.

I have a bolt action style mzl. now and an trying to sell it to get a break open type. Easier to access the primer with a gloved hand, IMO.
