Question Roadkill deer trophies?

DISCLAIMER: I don't hunt, for the same reasons Ron White doesn't - it's cold, dark and I don't wanna @&$in' go. I fully support hunting, however.

Now that that's out of the way...I live in Papillion and as such traverse Highway 370 quite frequently. More than once (at least three times) in the past couple years I've seen roadkilled bucks on the shoulder or in the ditch. Most recently I saw one on the west edge of Bellevue. Big sonnovagun, at least what was left of him.

His head was gone. Sawed off.

Is it just me, or is it, well, cheating to take a deer's head like that - especially and leave the carcass? It just seems....wrong. Why would someone do that? How desperate for a wall mount do you have to be to saw the head off a roadkilled deer?

Someone tell me I missed a meeting and this is okay, and I'll just chalk it up to my cluelessness. Please?

Jason

I don't know that it is technically legal without some kind of salvage permit. But if it was truly a roadkill and not poached, I can't say it bothers me that much. I've never cut the head off a roadkill but I have cut the heads of a couple of dead deer I found locked together before and they were full of maggots, so there wasn't any chance of saving anything.

see it all the time.

I know a guy that has a road kill deer mounted and also one he found dead on his property that a 13 year old boy shot that hunted with us and couldnt find that the other guy found dead mounted as well.

They run a guide service and show these 2 deer off to people. BWHAHAHAHA

Saw a buck just yesterday coming home from Fremont that was a huge body and no head. The vehicle must of been doing a very high rate of speed to sheer the deer's head off in a straight line just like someone would do with a saw.

No different than shooting a deer at 500yds. and calling it hunting. Some guys have to pound their chest every chance they get. And according to another thread, since others are taking roadkill heads, everyone must or they'll never get a buck(or something like that)

If the buck is dead and going to waste you might as well get something from it, that is just my opinion. In another way it is kind of like shed hunting, the fact is antlers are cool and you can never have enough.

Some guides simply use them as you would use sheds...to show the quality of deer on the property.

Another reason people take antlers from road kills are to use in crafts and such. Put an antler with a shoulder mount as decoration, people make lamps and other such items also. Heck, I gave bob_25 an antler and he used it as part of his fox shoulder mount.

I think its actually illegal to do without getting a some kind of permit from the G&P. I dont really see a problem with it, like others said its going to go to waste if not taken.

If you find a buck dead in the woods then you can legally cut the head/antlers off and take them so i would assume that would be the same if you found one of the side of the road? I could be wrong though.

I wouldn't be surprised if some taxidermist might take the heads to mount to promote his business, etc.

Default I would mount it

If I would ever hit a deer with a nice set of bone on his head I would love to be able to tell on lookers, "These are the deer I have shot with my bow, these are the deer I've taken with my rifle and this is the deer I killed with the buick."

I would also have it mounted with and OH SH%# look on his face to mimic a deer in the head lights

I thought it was illegal to keep an attached set of antlers with out a valid tag?

I haven't seen it here, but in SD when I worked for the GFP COs would step on the antlers and break them discouraging this from happening. I guess they figured getting hit by a vehicle while you're along-side the highway sawing antlers off was not the greatest way to go out.

It is against the law to remove any part of roadkill without taking the whole animal just so ya know. But salvage permits are easy to get.

I saw a post on another site one time about a guy that hit a nice buck and then had it mounted. Thought it was kind of interesting to mount a buck you hit with your truck. I figured that deer had already cost him enough money so i wouldnt waste any more.

must have permit to take any part of road kill and have to take whole animal. The Sheriff's office should have the permit too and be able to issue it.
