Default Embarking on a new adventure

Hey guys, I talked about this in another thread and I need to be carefull what I say as I cant say much but I wanted to let you all know that I'm embarking on a new chapter in my life.

As some of you may know, I sell High End CNC manufacturing equipment in Iowa & Nebraska. Part of my job is comming up with new ways to make an existing product, more effiecient, higher profitability etc... As a result I'm always looking at things and thinking of ways to make the product itself better. I've come up with all kinds of ideas that help my customers but have never went the extra step to help myself, until now.

I've been putting in some quality time in my tree stand bow hunting and the other day I was sitting there anylizing my G5 Montec broadhead and it hit me. A way to make this better! a completely new design!

I cannot divulge how I'm going to do this or what it's going to look like but rest assured it'll be completely different from anything you've ever seen. I can say this with honesty as I even went and searched the US patent office for this and NOTHING has come close!

I have access to various CNC equipement along with my own non-CNC tools in my shop and have begun prototyping. I even went to Cabelas and bought a bunch of existing broadheads to modify and play with. I'm busy with work and hunting but I'm hoping that I'll have a shooter or two ready here in a week or two. Most likely after deer season I'll begin trials.

My issue is how to test this. I'd really like to test it on a side of beef but I really hate the thought of wasting good meat like that but it may be what it comes down too. I don't want to test it on any deer until I know it's a good solid unit that is lethal. I don't want to wound a poor deer and have it suffer.

So, that's it... Once I get far enough and can prove enough to get a patent then I'll start sharing what it looks like and data on my progress!

Wish me luck guys!

Aric

Test it on a side of hog. They are cheap and you could shoot it a thousand times.

If you need any help testing let me know. Im a fan of that type of broadhead.

Good luck, ADV! Even though I am not an archery hunter, I will definately keep my eyes open for updates.

As far as testing goes, have you thought about using ballistics gelatin? I would think it would work great for what you would need to test. I would think you could melt it down after a round of testing and use it again for the next round of testing so it may be cost effective as well. Heck, you go even go all Mythbusters and make a mold of the "vitals".

I did some quick research on Ballistic gel and while I found a bunch of ways to make it from off the shelf stuff I did also find out where Mythbusters gets their Gelitan and it's in Sioux City IA! [ www.gelita.com ]

Pretty cool! I cover that territory and get up there quite a bit so next time through I'm going to drop in and pick some ingredients up!

That's actually not a bad idea when the time comes... I want to anylize organ damage and get some cutting data for how it fares with bones.

Anyone want to sell me a cheap goat here in a couple of months?

Thats what I was going to say. Mythbusters and other shows on Discovery use hogs all the time to replicate a human body.

Maybe you could get some volunteers from PETA since they are against testing on animals. I am sure you could get a few to trade places with the goat. Lol. Good luck with your idea.

Another source is what you see laying every few miles. Road killed deer. They seem to be everywhere.

I wonder what the legality of that is? I'd hate to collect a few, take em down to my place for experimentation and then get nailed by the G&PC because they think I'm an A-hole poacher or something!

I was going to say road kill deer also. To avoid the poaching appearance, when you find one on the side of the road, call the sherrif's office and they can give you a "road kill permit" (I think is what it is called).

Then you just keep that in your possession as proof.

Good luck though.

OK, so in case any of you have been wondering about how this project is comming I thought I'd fill you in.

I have not yet started any prototypes yet. With the Holidays, work and snow I have not gotten much shop time.

I have spent some quality time doing research on certain aspects of the design that I want to incorporate and how I might be able to do it. I've also drawn up the skeleton of this in a simple CAD program I have. I've also spoken with a couple of customers that might be able to help me get things rolling once I settle on a design.

I'll be Goose hunting in Valentine this weekend and after that the plan is to get the shop cleaned up and prepare to start some prototypes with what limited tools for mfg I have in my shop. I'm pretty lucky as well as we're getting a new CNC Mill into our showroom in the next month which will really help out. I'll toss on my indexer and be able to really play with things!

My hope is that by March I'll have a few different prototypes ready to go! I'd like to start testing then!

That's it for now... I'll update this thread as I do more.

Aric
