So I just cleaned my gun after the first river hunt of the season and I was curious what everyone likes to use to get all that grime and dirt and sand out of your action and hard to reach areas of the trigger mechanism? I used Rusty Duck and it didn't do a very good job.

Hot water and the sprayer on the kitchen sink. Dry it very well(prefer to blow dry it with my wife's hair dryer). Then, add some type of lubricant/rust proofer that doesn't buildup and just collect more dirt like most oils do.

stay away from that....there is a spray you can buy . its like gum out for your car motor . you can get it at scheels . forget the name . eats shot deposits and grime ...spray untill clear fluids come out . then relube with rem oil . never heard of anyone usein water . |

And I go thru 3-4 cases of shells a year with no problems. BTW,the garden hose works well too.IMO,the worst thing you can do is add oil after cleaning,it just makes all the dust/dirt stick to everything ya just cleaned. I'll spray some sort of dry lube/rust proofer on and then wipe it all off(any that doesn't dry/evaporate) after it sits abit. A well lubed gun may work good for the prissy guys that don't get their guns dirty but throwing my gun around in the laydown/marsh/cornfields,etc. is just asking for problems if ya got it all lubed up IMO.Alex |

i havent heard of anyone using water either, but it is the universal solvent, and as long as precautions are taken against rust i dont see any reason against it, although unconventional. I prefer birchwood casey gun scrubber aerosol, might be the same thing that the others were talking about at scheels, then finishing with rem oil, that stuff is awesome

Back when I shot a lot of trap with my trusty 1100, I cleaned the trigger group as follows:
1) Hose it down good with WD40 2) Blow it out good with compressed air Kept it humming right along. The Red Dot flakes would come out in clumps sometimes.

Thats what I've done before when it was really sandy/gritty. Father had a gun that fell out of the airboat into the river while unloading and they used a can of WD40 to clean it out. Then hunted the rest of the morning. |

I tried that gun scrubber stuff from Birchwood years ago and it basically ate the finish on the gun;be careful where is gets sprayed and where the excess runs off onto.

Rubbing alcohol and compressed air works good to remove debris from the trigger group and reciever.

Go to wal-mart and get their cheapest can of carb-cleaner. You'll never look back. It will blast any grime and dirt away with ease. Just be carefull using it around certain plastics because it will dissolve it. I don't know if it will dissolve a synthetic stock or not, but I would remove the stock and forearm for cleaning whether its wood or plastic. Also, be carefull of frostbite as the carb-cleaner removes alot of heat as it decompresses. Make sure to re-oil when finished.

I use that gun scrubber mentioned above. They make different kinds for wood and synthetic but I would be cautious after reading what Alex said even though Ive never had that problem.

Break Parts Cleaner or Carb Cleaner is the same stuff as Gun Scrubber, but it's about a 1/3 the price. All it is, is a aerosol solvent, works great!

When the John Deere mechanic came out to work on the 4430 he grabbed a can of starting fluid and went to cleaning parts. Looked like a good idea to me. I tried it on the M2 it worked great. Might try it. Pretty cheap at walmart or dollar general.
