Default How about this setup?

Guys, I am going to be ordering some new equipment tonight, or tomorrow AM. Here is the list

Mossberg 500 24" rifled slug barrel

TruGlo 4x shotgun scope

4 boxes of Hornady SST Sabot Slugs

Any input on this, would be great. I have researched this pretty extensively for the past 2 months would like some input and what scope rings would you guys recommend?

Aaron

Sounds like hunting deer. Hunting with shotgun/ slug for deer is a great time.

I always prefer steel rings like warne or burris. You may want to make sure you have enough recoil protection from them hard kicking slugs.

If it's for deer and it's in Nebraska why not use a rifle? Now if he is going to Iowa or a state like that then ya I can understand it. But even at that, I would never buy a mossberg, I'd pay a few bucks more and get a good gun like a remington or a bennelli.

Yes its for deer, and the mossberg was my grandfathers given to me as a wedding gift, so its a work with what you got scenario. I enjoy hunting with a shotgun, dont need to shoot deer at more than 150 yds.

If the gun is free I guess that explains it. 150 yards with a shotgun is a pretty far shot, doable but not easy. You would be better off with a muzzle loader or a 3030. Good luck!

Wow, no love for the shotguns... I would eventually like to have this shotgun, be a multi-purpose weapon, just change the barrell to change what I hunt. I really enjoy using a shotgun, and where I hunt I don't need to be making any shots over 125-150 yards max. With the set up I have picked I can dial it in to less than a 2 inch group at 100 yards with a .58 caliber sabot slug, and a sub-5 inch group at 200 yards. It also opens up going over to Iowa to get in on their shotgun season. I guess that I have become very accustomed to how this weapon works kind of like the glock I carry for work, not saying I wouldn't use a rifle I am very comfortable with them its just not what I am looking for right now.

Aaron, I love hunting shot/ slug for deer as I find it a lot more challenging and rewarding than hunting with rifle. However I see the joy and benefits of hunting with rifle here in NE as do some others. To each his own I guess.

Have fun and good luck.

Did you get the cantilevered barrel? I have the same set up with the cantilevered barrel and a Bushnell shotgun scope. I used Weaver rings. I've fired plenty of slugs and never had to readjust the scope. I use Remington Copper Solid slugs in 2 3/4" and accuracy and dropping power are great. I've also shot the Hornady slugs and as you've found out, they shoot great and will drop deer quickly.

My 500 was also a hand-me-down and does have sentimental value. It is a multipurpose gun and the removable slug barrel is great, you'll like it.

TA2D, have you thought about getting a .50 call muzzle loading barrel for your Mossberg 500?

I like shotguns I would deer hunt with one if I had to, rifles are just sooooooo much better and there is nothing wrong with killing a deer at 300 yrds, to me with a rifle its how far away you can kill them ( providing you are proficient at long distance shooting) with a bow its how close you can get them. Any way, dont think that anyone is putting you down because you want to hunt deer with a shotgun to each his own, the main thing is you are a hunter.

I wasnt trying to stir the spit pot, most of where I hunt is heavy timber, the last buck I shot was at ten yards, and had one sneak up on me and was at 11 feet, before I spooked him! I like the challenge of the shotgun hunt, and there is just something about slinging a huge chunk of lead. Not sure if it is the cantilevered barrel, but I know that it has the integrated scope mount and no iron sights. Just got my season choice tag so if it doesnt get any use next week, I do have January to give it a whirl. I have thought about getting the muzzleloader conversion as well, but my next purchase for the mossberg will be the accu-choke barrel just have to decide on lenght. Thanks for the input guys, I will let you know how it handles on paper as well as deer!

i'll give ya some love for the shotguns -- where i'm from in MI, we can't hunt with rifles, so i have a Remington 870 with camo pistol-grip stock, with a $300 hastings CSD barrel, 3-9x40 Bushnell scope, and i use the same Hornady SST slugs. i can put 5 slugs in a 6" circle at 200 yards, and have killed a lot of deer with that combo. my .308 works great too, but i like my shotty just as much.
