Default Removing antlers from a skull?

I have a set of antlers that I'd like to use for rattling, but they are still attached to the skull. They seem pretty solid. Any tricks to remove the antlers from the skull aside from sawing them off at the base?

Sawing them would be the only way to remove them.

A hack saw or bone saw will make short work of removing them.

LOL only shoot them off if your in the field and have an AO only tag.. (JK)

Like what others said saw them off. Hack saw/tree saw anything..

IF IF you plan to keep the rack together I would just try and make sure the head has been frozen or in the cold cold winter weather so everything is frozen when you cut the skull.

LMAO. If one were to say, shoot them off. What would you recommend? High caliber, small caliber, bullet weight? Should I hold the head in one hand, and shoot with the other hand? I'd love to see my neighbor's jaw hit the kitchen counter as she looks out the window watching me attempt this. Saw sounds good to me. Although I don't know if this is the best alternative either. Sharp things + Me = Not always the most appealing outcome. I just thought that a guy could wiggle them loose, so to speak. I know bucks naturally drop their antlers, so I just assumed I'd be able to work it loose kinda like a tooth. Doesn't sound like it. I'll have my wife supervise, phone in hand, with EMS on speed dial. Maybe I'll just save some time and do this right there in the emergency room parking lot.

I put 911 on speed dial a long time ago. All I have to do is hit #32 and help is on the way.

By the way here is a handy tool for removing antlers, splitting a pelvis, and other butchering chores.

Ok... I am confused as to why someone would take the time to hit #32 when they could dial 911? Not trying to start anything just wondering if in the confusion would it really help? I agree with your sawzall comment though... When it comes to home processing they are an absolute must have. I can hear it now... Quick, what's the number for 911--- #32!!!! LOL

Saw them off. I did that a few years ago.

SUCCESS! I took care of it this weekend. Don't own a saws-all, so a hand saw was my weapon of choice. Let me just say that there's a reason bucks can crash those things into the ground, trees, and other bucks w/o any concern. Those things are solid. I quickly realized that about 3/4 of the way through the first one...about the time my sawing arm went numb. No trips to the ER, no major loss of blood (Not for me anyway. Can't say the same for the previous owner), and I now have a nice set of rattling antlers.

That's exactly how I did it. Fun huh?
