Default Archery Buck Down!

After getting a picture message from flatcoats of a buck he had shot, I was pretty antsy about gettin' out and settin' in my blind. So, after my last class of the day I hurried to get my gear together and to drive to my hunting area.

Got into my blind around 4:00, and hadn't seen anything moving untill about 5:00 when a coyote snuck by outisde of bow range. It quieted down again untill just a little before 6:00 when I heard a noise to the southwest of me. I picked up my bow and readied myself for a shot if it happened to be a nice buck. He stepped out of the trees at about 23 yards, and was on the move. I drew back and gave him a grunt to stop him, then let my arrow fly. Being the last few minutes of light I wasn't for sure where my arrow hit, but I heard a good thump.

He whirled around at the shot and I could hear him crashing through corn stalks and branches. After calming myself down a little, I picked up my gear and headed to my truck to make a few phone calls. Dad was harvesting corn so he couldn't be there for another 2 hours, so after giving him about an hour, I started to trail him.

This is where I have to give a shout-out to the rage 2 blades. The amount of blood on this trail was crazy. A blind man could have followed it with no trouble. I followed the trail for about 100 yards before finding my arrow, covered in blood almost up to the fletchings. That's when I started thinking he couldn't be much farther.

But, after another 200 yards, I was starting to doubt my shot. The trail then led into a cornfield, and followed a sprayer track through the corn. The blood was staying good and constant, and in spots I was finding big pools.

It was about another 100 yards before I saw eyes shine about 50 yards up in front of me. So I clipped my head lamp to a corn stalk and backed out, thinking he might still be alive and not wanting to bump him. About half an hour later my dad met me at the road and we headed towards the light. We couldn't see the eyes anymore, so we proceded with the trail. Found him laying dead right where I saw the eyes shine.

Here's what we found

He was didn't have any G2's, so he was just a big 6 point. If I would have had more time to look him over, I might have passed on him, but I'm still pretty happy with him. He was a really big bodied deer, which made the almost 400 yard drag through the corn extremely tough. We had to take it 6 rows at a time.

Congrats BP. I took some vacation this week and have hunted the last 3 mornings and not much moving in the mornings. Did see the buck we would like to shoot but he was out of shooting range.

Great deer! That is the biggest 3X3 I have ever seen. For what it's worth, I think you helped to improve your future hunting by getting him out of the gene pool. Congrats and stay after them.

BP,
I'm tickled to death for you. I'm happy your physics teacher has been teaching you about projectile motion. Way to get the right pin on him.
