Default Hunter's Education Question (maybe for a G&P guy)

I was reading in the Hunting guide and I noticed in the Hunters education part it said required for all hunters age 12 - 29.

I am wondering if that means that in a couple months when I turn 30 I won't have to have hunter's education to get a license. I've already had the firearm course but if I was to take up bowhunting next year would I not have to take the bowhunting course and still be legal?

That's a good questions Phazedoubt. I remember seeing that age range somewhere too, and it kind of threw me for a loop. I didn't think much of it though. For some reason I had it in my head that I was born in the first year that they required a hunter to have hunter safety ('78). I thought anyone born prior to '78 was grandfathered in so to speak. Interested to see a response from someone who has the skinny on this one.

It's 77 though. Just know that because I made the cut by 6 days.

Thought bow ed was the same, but I'm sure it is on the ngpc page somewhere.

Deer - Age 16 and up - Hunter education *1 *2 *3

*1 Hunters ages 12 through 29 must have on their person proof of successful
completion of firearm Hunter Education while hunting with a firearm or
crossbow

*2 Hunters ages 12 through 29 must have on their person proof of successful
completion of bowhunter Hunter Education while hunting deer, antelope, elk,
or mountain (bighorn) sheep with bow and arrow.

*3 Hunters ages 12 through 29 who have not completed firearm and/or
bowhunter Hunter Education may obtain an Apprentice Hunter Education

The way I read it, you do not need to take the course once you are 30.

I'm almost sure that when they print next years info the age will say 30 year old and the next year 31 year old. I am looking at my hunter ed instruction book and it says " any individual born after January 1, 1977 must complete hunter education in order to hunt." So I think as each years new manual comes out the age number will change. Mike Streeter at Game and Parks would be the person to call as he is the head of our states hunter ed. program.

Yeah you won't need it here if you are over 30 but if you plan on hunting out of state they require it not matter what your age.

That's not necessarily true, some states have a "born after this date" clause too.

The law used to read everyone born after 1/1/77, but I see that it now reads "any person age twenty-nine and younger."

I wasn't even aware of that change...

Other states still use the "born after" law, so be sure to check the law if you travel out of state.
