shot 10 by about 930. need corn out. it was a wham bam deal. off the roost and gone. certainly not like some openers, but thought we did above average considering zero crops out. lots of roosters, think we had a good hatch. 7 of 10 were yoy. all but one were off point though, so that was fun.

We shot a two man limit in about an hour this morning on public land. Also shot a bonus sharptail and bluebill. Brian's dog also had some great points. Lots of young birds and also seen a ton of birds.

dad and I shot our 6 in two fields. The dog did a nice job holding the birds down. 5 out of the 7 fields we tried already had people in them when we showed up (all private land). Didn't know we shared our fields with that many people but it seems like people are always out for the opener and that's it. Hopefully they all had permission as we only got to talk to a few of the groups. It was very wet out there too, half of our milo was completely underwater. Can't really comment on the outlook of the season until the corn comes out, but we saw a decent number of birds.

Went out this evening. Seen lots of birds flushing wild. I got one.. Most of the birds were in thistles Lots of grain in. I also found a sink hole about 2 feet deep to my surprize! The ground just swallowed me in? Hopefully as the weeks progress the fields come out, the bird numbers will increase. I was overall impressed with the amount I seen. I just need them to hold tighter.

I made it out this morning after seeing a good portion of the snow melt yesterday. I got my limit and my dad got one. Heading back out tomarrow!! Pics to come!

Well here they are!! The first pic is from Saturday.

The second pic is from Sunday. This is of my dad and our new assistant city manager. He is from Texas and has not been pheasant hunting in well over 10 years. He managed to get his first Nebraska bird on this hunt. Needless to say, I think he now has the fever for everything outdoor nebraska!!

Went out today 30 min south of Lincoln. Saw some birds, but not too many. Ended with 1 rooster and 2 quail. Those fields are still muddy. Some even had standing water around the terraces. Farmers might be able to get back out later this week if it stays dry. Got a workout walking a milo field with the ten extra pounds of mud on my boots.

well looks like my dad and i chose the wrong state hunted all day yesterday and half of today in iowa aboce highway 20 and so very few birds and the onlt ones we seen instantly ran into the unpicked corn fields. over all between the 2 of us fired one round one pheasant the farther north in the state the more crops were picked but overall if any of you are headed out that way i would say stay home not worth all the driving for maybe seen a total of 15-20 with a dog...

Its the corn crop, with so much still in the field, seems to be a lot more work until some of it comes out. My bro and I were jsut sitting in the car this am next to the crp just waiting for the sun and in the span of 5 minutes say at least 2 roosters and a couple of hens fly into the adjacent corn crop.

Had a much better day today, went back to the NE and started in the same field as yesterday and got one good rooster early on after another group flushed him our way from the other end of the field (my bro should of had one about 5 minutes in, but he got the dreaded hunter's click). Second field yielded nothing, however third area was much better and we ended up with one limit by about 11. Over all saw a lot more birds today but some of them flushed pretty far out. (if we had both been more experienced and had a halfway competant dog we both would have limited by lunch time easy).

All in all a successful opener for two first-timers hunting on public land without dogs, not to mention the crop situation! thanks for all the help guys!

Hunted in central nebraska and we ended up shooting 7 roosters and 2 grouse saturday morning. Saw a lot of birds and a lot more hens and a lot of the pheasants were very small, one was probably the smallest i've ever seen shot. Like said before the unpicked corn didn't help matters and the birds left the fields fairly quickly and headed for the corn. I don't think i saw one picked field of corn around where we hunted, hopefully with dryer weather that will change.

huskerbowhunter,
My group experienced the same thing too and the permission I had was re-affirmed the night before the hunt that noone else was going to be there deer hunting or pheasant hunting. Oh well no matter we did OK for what we walked. I was in Burt county in the hills. I know there are at least two groups of hunters that go out opening day and pretty much hunt on every piece of ground where they know the landowner, permission or not in Burt. The field we used to lease for ducks/geese on the bottoms got hit by one of the groups a few years ago while we were duck hunting and the landowner just kinda brushed it off like, "that's the way those guys are they go wherever they want." There was probably 10 or 12 guys a big Suburban and a pickup.

As for use we saw alot of birds and walked over a bunch too! After figuring it out and working really slow with the dogs we were flushing way more birds. Lots of hens too! Amazing how tight everything held saturday and how many birds we saw with all the crops still in. Its going to be a heck of a year if/when we get some snow and the crops ever get out! No quail this year...wierd.
