Default Pheasants in SD - 2009

Went up to SD, Winner area 2 weekends ago. Very warm, crops still in, but tons of birds around. If you've never been to SD to hunt birds, I'd recommend this month. The cover is good, the birds are thick and the crops will be out. It's a good time to go.

This is my buddy's 12 yr old daughter, Rebecca with a bird she shot over my other bud's old bird dog, Missy. Rebecca and her 4 sisters all hunt with their mom, dad and extended family. They've all been out chasing pheasants since they were in diapers. Rebecca shot her first deer last weekend up on the ranch there, as well.

This, I believe could be the world's largest puffball, encountered deep in a shelterbelt. That's a 20 ga there, for comparison.

No, I didn't shoot it, never even thought of it. DANG, that would have been COOL!!

That was my first thought, you should have backed up 10 yards and shot that thing...probably not safe, but sure would have been awesome!

We had a great day in the field on saturday with some excellent dog work. All three of us shot our limit. Took about 4 hours, but 6 out of the 9 we shot within the last half hour of the hunt.

havent pheasant hunted since opening weekend, but am gonna be getting after it hard for the next few months. got out for a quick hunt on some public this afternoon. the place looks awesome with all the moisture we had this year, lots of nice roosting and loafing habitat...much better than years before. just need some not 55 and calm days to push some birds in. saw one rooster, shot one rooster, and got another half dozen hens airborn. guess not bad for public in the middle of the day on a nice day.

Hope to have some success to report later this week. Optiprime, I love that Ithaca Side by Side you've got there. Is that a Model 100?

Finally had a good day in the field today with the roosters after a couple weeks of misery(could be an understatement). I think the rain really helped the scent conditions for the dog and with the corn finally come out around the farm the birds were absolutely stacked in the milo. We honestly saw probably 95 percent roosters to hen today, but I'm sure that ratio will quickly change. Its looking like it could be a good year but well have to wait and see. Talked to some area farmers and they both reported seeing large numbers of birds this year while in the fields, contrary to last year where they said they hardly saw any. Game on.

It is a Ithaca 200E. Good Eye! I grew up shooting my pops field grade 20 gauge and had to have one of my own. I picked this one up last fall off of gunbroker.com. Sweetest shooting little gun ever and light to pack all day.

Happy Hunting

Hunted pheasants last saturday and couldn't believe how many birds we saw but they were wild as hell and would all flush well before we got to them. Only managed a few long shots and had nothing to show for all of the birds that we saw. My dogs only flushed a few hens but we would be walking along and you would see pheasants getting up way ahead of us and flying out of the field. I'm not sure why they wouldn't sit tight at all, maybe it was too nice but if we get some cold weather and some snow on the ground, watch out, game on!

got out this morning and shot a few. cannot believe how wild theyre acting for november! we literally stepped in the field and the birds would be in the air. most didnt let us get within 150yards on private land thats been hunted maybe twice. we need that first snow blanket bad. nothing was holding. the birds we shot ran and ran and ran and finally just got pinned down by the dogs and had to fly.

We haven't had trouble with the birds being wild, but I'm sure they are definitely getting smarter after getting after em 4 consecutive days in a row and we know the days are numbered that the birds are dumb enough to sit this good. I had to literally kick 2 in the butt after I saw em sitting on the ground in front of the dog to get em up. Definitely had some runners this morning but there was enough that held good for the dog to make for a good shoot. Its still unbelievable the ratio of roosters to hens we've been seeing. I'd say we saw 90 percent roosters this morning to 10 percent hens. Not really sure what's up with that but I'll take it.

Birds were wild for me yesterday as well . The high winds made for nerves birds. And will put your shooting skills to the test.

Pointed pheasants jumping at 30 yards.

Ended with a limit of big birds and a young dog snacked on my 6th quail of the day

went out today and hunted the hard way...two guys, no dog. we saw lots of birds, perhaps 60 or so. only had one rooster flush in range and he died. birds were jumping wild but we hunted mostly well known public spots. more birds than i've seen in this area the last few years.

Went down to my wifes' place in Johnson county this a.m. Saw about a dozen pheasants, only 3 were roosters and took 1. Got up 3 coveys of quail and took 6. Not a bad 3 hour morning. Glad to see the quail down there doing awesome again.

I carry an Ithaca model 500 O/U 12 ga. I absolutely love it. I would really like to get a 100 or 200 in 20 ga. to match it. Back on topic, dad and I have shot around 12 roosters between the two of us the last 4 days. Seeing more birds than I can remember for some time. Had a really good morning this morning. 4 of us killed 8 roosters and 3 quail.

got out after girlfriends families thanksgiving this afternoon for about an hour. birds are still really, really running hard...but pinned down three at least. cant complain. lots of relocating points, but thats kinda fun to watch sometimes. thought i might be able to trick some geese into range that were flying around....no such luck.

Default One & Done

Hunted some really heavy WPA cover today with my 10 yr old Choc. lab Walter.
2 hour workout for the only rooster I saw.
At least we went 1for1..
Maybe we'll hit it again this afternoon late.

4 of us got out today and managed 10 roosters and one quail. pretty tough conditions though, windy, dry, and hot.

waiting for some snow to hit the family's property but from what I hear nobody has hunted it yet. Should turn out to be pretty good as usual.
