I need some advise from my fellow White tailers!
I've had my stands up for quite some time now and they are in some really good spots but I found some really active scrapes and a crap load of rubs in another area. I've put out my cameras to spot Mr Big and if it's the dude I think it is... well... I want to do everything in my power to nab him! So, if this is him I'd like to toss up a stand... it'd have to be a new one as all of my others are set up. I'm worried about smell and intruding on the Big Boys turf and wanting to hunt it to soon... What are your thoughts? Do I chance it and see what happens? possibly throwing this dude out of his pattern? or do I stay away and hope he eventually makes his way past another one of my stands? Closest being 1/8 mile away or so in a different set of trees? Help me out here! What would you do?

hang a stand and get out for a few days. ALL my pope and youngs ive shot, I shot the FIRST time I sat in those particular stand sites. I read somewhere that its crazy the percentage of trophy animals that are taken on the first sit. get in, get set, and get out.

Thanks Man!
I was thinking that if I do this, I might toss one up Sat morning after I'm done Pheasant hunting (I never miss opening morning!) and then go back the following week.

I've moved moved stands and sat them that day and killed deer. I've waited a few days and killed deer too. I prefer though to wait until a day before it is supposed to rain to move stands though. Get them moved and then the next day the rain comes and washes away (or at least dilutes it a bit) what scent you leave behind before the deer really notice you've been there. This is based more on a S.W.A.T (Scientific Wild *****ed Theroy) than anything
but it seems to keep the deer guessing ![]() |

And if ya do spook him out of this area and he goes 1/8 mile or so away.........
IMO,the only thing that can ruin a standis overuse(which could lead to extra scent being left, deer seing you move in the stand, etc.) If a deer is used to using an area and is comfortable in that area, any slight difference may make him cautious but not make him move out,he's there for a reason. If your going to hang one I would do it fast during the pre rut, once peak rut hits he wont be using the scrapes nearly as often. Id do like flatcoats said, hang it let it sit for a day or 2. Wear rubber boots when you hang it to minimize your scent.

All on the same day I've put stands up, immediately hunted from them, and have had success.

my opinion is to not overthink this one. just do a good stealth job of putting it up, you know watch the noise and watch the scent, and hunt it if you have time right away, if you cant hunt it for a day or two then do it then

I think if it was me, I would get there two hours before sunrise saturday morning and hang it as quietly as possible and sit in it for opening pheasant morning. Thats always a great morning to be in stand. But, thats just me.

When I deerhunted I never left a stand up, hardly anyway. As said above, the best time in a stand was always the first time I hunted it. Doing things like this, I always had a fresh stand site hunting over hot activity and setup for the conditions.
I had a little lightweight portable I could putup easily and QUIETLY. Get there earlier than ya normally would, this time of year I wouldnt hesitate to be out there at noon and many times I would just get the stand hung or would be halfway up the tree hanging and deer would be on the move. Sneak into your area, be careful what your brushing up against on your way in, and take your time doing things, its not a race. ![]()

Its been awhile since I have hunted whitetails but we used to build permant stands on the river and hunt out of them year after year. We always killed deer out of them. We never hunted for a trophy though we just hunted for meat. I havent hunted that ground for probably 8-10 years until now. I sat in the same stand that I killed my first whitetail out of about 15 years ago just the other night and saw deer and could of shot one if I could have quit shaking so bad ( I have never shot a deer with my bow). I plan on going out again this weekend and WILL pull the trigger(hopefully).
Moral of the story you don't have to have new stands or put them up fresh all of the time. Depends on what kind of hunting you are doing I guess. Chris ![]() ![]()

IMO, it's never too late.
And I wouldn't hesitate hunting it the day you set it up.

If it really mattered much, tree climber stand manufacturers would not be able to sell stands to people that had owned one before. Some carry them in on the days they hunt. Prevents stealing also.

I no real experience with this, but this hasn't stopped me before....
How late to set up a stand? I'd say about 4 p.m. if you want to hunt the evening movement.
