I kept track last year, asked at 36 different places and was told no 36 times. Combine that with the fact that Nebraska is ranked 47th out of 50 states (only 2 states worse than us) as far as percentage of land for public use and you'll see the very, very difficult task ahead of you. Bottom line, unless you know or are related to someone with land, it's next to impossible to get permission to hunt deer in this state. However, if you're lucky enough to have deep pockets to buy land, pay for a lease, or willing to pay a guide hundreds if not thousands to get a deer, you'll find the people of this state very friendly and helpful.............

This is the wrong time of the year to start knocking on doors. It should have been done this spring. Most landowners (myself included) are not going to have a high opinion of you if you can't think ahead and plan for deer hunting. This time of the year is very busy with harvest and the last thing the landowner wants is to be constantly interrupted by people asking to hunt. If you are serious about wanting to hunt private land start asking in the spring and not only offer to help do some chores or maintainance but get some done before you start to hunt. I still own land in southwest Nebraska, but since moving to Lincoln for school and work I've managed to earn permission on several private ponds for fishing (I don't worry about hunting as I just go home for that). Getting permission requires legwork, a good attitude, and putting your best foot forward when you first meet the landowner. Don't get mouthy when they say no as word travels fast and you will develop a reputation. Thank them for their time and ask if they know anyone else who might be willing to let you hunt. DON"T SHOW UP AT THE DOOR WITH ALL YOUR HUNTING BUDDIES, DOGS, GUNS, ETC. - FASTEST WAY TO GET REJECTED.

HMMMMM, I bet 90% of the time I ask to goose hunt a cornfield, the landowner says..."wouldn't you rather shoot the deer instead?" I even had one lady offer the use of her porch to sit on and wait for the deer to come into her front yard. All within 20minutes of Omaha's city limits. I've been turned down to goose hunt but was told I could shoot all the deer I wanted. Maybe I should start deer hunting again. Sometimes ya gotta look at the not-so-obvious places to gain permission to deer hunt as most of the pristine habitat(river bottom ground, etc.)is spoken for. Good luck to you guys chasin' those big rabbits.

I don't totally agree with all of that except the part of all your hunting buddies. I think the fastest way to get rejected for deer hunting is to say it'll be just me.....my dad.....maybe an uncle.......and a couple of buddies for the season. I see "ads" on here and other forums/sites that are always looking for places to hunt for themselves and "others". Try starting off getting ground for yourself and gain the landowner's trust about you and then ask to bring a friend or family member along once in awhile maybe the second or thrid year you ask for permission.

LOL...Pretty tough to dispute. Deer hunting in Nebraska is a completely different game compared to fishing, pheasants, etc.. Of course all you can do is keep trying, but your post reminded me of what I was trying to do last year.
I had been hunting a piece of property for the last three years for pheasants and deer. Last year during muzzloader season, I noticed the deer using the cornfield adjacent to the property I was hunting. Because of wind direction it was difficult to try and intercept these deer going in and out of the corn field. So I tracked down the property owner to see if I could get into that field to approach from the opposite side. Well I got the same old story that everyone in he family hunts, so there is no room for another hunter (gee never heard that one before). What bothered me about the whole thing is, for the entire three years I've been hunting the adjacent property, I have NEVER seen anyone even in the adjacent property, much less hunt it!

Good luck and keep trying.

I wish you the best of luck in your efforts! Just please, If you get frustrated do NOT trespass!

Every year I have to kick people out of my land and it gets so frustrating!

I can not believe anyone could go 0 for 36. You must be trying to access platt river bottoms or something

Check into the Mahoney hunts they are having this year. Like many have said, private land is going to be tuff. I get turned down every time I ask, because I am usually asking to get on riverbottom( you know, where bowhunters might like to hunt). I have been offered open fields to hunt, but, that is not the hunting experience that I am looking for.
Most of the public spots are good for does, but don't expect any wallhangers.

Another idea that worked for me is who you know. Many folks who live in Omaha or Lincoln have relatives in smaller towns. Below is my example from 2 years ago.

My daughter had a boyfriend and he knew I was a bowhunter (does EVERYONE know you are a bowhunter?). He mentioned it to his mother who had relatives in a town an hour away from Omaha. Her response back was "he should call my brothers and sister and hunt their land". He later told me this so I picked up the phone and called her to get their #'s. Those were really easy cold calls because I could mention the sister in Omaha. Two out of three already had hunters on the property but the third only had 1. I received permission for all 3 but have only hunted the 1. It turns out the 1 guy hardly ever hunts and when he does it is only on 1 of the 3 properties this farmers has.

Check out a lot of the WMA's around lincoln. There are a bunch of places around there that can provide you with a VERY good chance of getting one.

Chance of getting a 150class buck probably not, doe heck yes!
