Default Hwy 50 Smokehouse

A new deer processing place just opened yesterday in Tecumseh, NE. They are only going to take de-boned deer meat. This smokehouse is in business with the beef/hog locker in Tecumseh. The owners are related somehow. Anyways they do an excellent job with beef and pork (thier waiting list is 6 months long) so I'd assume they will do an excellent job when it comes to deer as well. This being their first season I'd assume they will have to start with low prices to establish their business. If your in the market for a processor to try I would try this one....

The past few years I have used Wahoo Locker in Wahoo,Ne. I recommend the deer dogs, jerky, and jalapeno cheddar cheese sticks.

Just a heads up to everyone that Salisteans' meat company, the old Van fleets in Ralston, is accepting deer to be turned in for the Open Door Mission. Last year you had to pay a $50 dollar processing fee to donate, all tax deductible of course. Now they accept the deer at no charge and are really encouraging hunters to donate as many deer as they can. The Open Door Mission is struggling with feeding everyone, so if you are out and have a chance to shoot an extra doe, they would definitely appreciate it. I have harvested two so far this year, one for me and one for donation. I felt pretty good about it. BTW, they do a pretty good job with their processiong as well.

This is GREAT news! not everyone can addord to pay the fees but want to help and also want to keep hunting! I have the ability to get 4 deer this year between archery & rifle but would only need 2. This gives me a ?HUGE opportunity to help out others while also managing my territory!

Thanks for the update!

It's about time a processor steps up to do this without charging the hunter that has already spent the money on permits, gas, and other expenses.

Default Deer Processing

Had a similar experience w/Frank's in Wilber. Shot a doe during muzzleloader, and didn't get it back until June/July. The only reason we got it back then is because I just showed up one Saturday morning to pick it up. They scrambled around for about fifteen minutes, but they finally got it all together. Was it all my deer? Doubt it, but I was getting sick of dealing w/them.

I agree M & K in Unadilla is a good option. With bonus tags it's not uncommon for most hunters to harvest at least two deer per season. Last year I had M & K process my doe. I dropped it off whole, and to have it skinned, boned, ground including mixed w/beef tallow only ran me $85. Very quick turnaround too. Probably preweighed my deer and pulled that amount from a batch though. I don't know. I can't recall if they guarantee your own deer back or not. You have to question whether or not that is the case w/all of the deer that these places process in a season. I've never processed my own deer, but a lot of people I talked to who do process their own said that for $85 it's worth it when you consider all the time spent and hard work doing it yourself. Ground venison is a good way to use up deer. We mix it w/anything that calls for hamburger, and you can't even tell the difference. I can't recall who it was, but I like the idea of the locker giving you your meat back to freeze and having you bring it in later if they are too busy.

Also tried Diller last year for jerky, summer sausage, etc. Good stuff, but after reading these posts I think I'll try somewhere new. Definitely a fan of muscle jerky vs. formed. Best muscle jerky?

so will the place in Ralston take de-boned meat????

I have some packed in freezer paper, etc, and would love to be able to make a donation to the needy.

They did say that they would accept deboned meat and even meat (venison) leftover from last year. Right now the Open Door Mission is giving each individual 2 1/2 ounces of meat. They are supposed to be recieving between 4-5 ounces of meat, so anything will help.
