I just got back and only deer I seen was a dead one. Bugs were terrible first half hour or so, after that they were tolerable. Just have to remember to wear 2 shirts. Just got in from getting a deer caped and in the freezer. Heading to bed.

Got out last night for the first time to a new spot and was planning on trying to take a nice doe. Definitely nice for a change of pace as i saw around 20 deer compared to the usual 2-3 at my other spots. Ended up having a nice big doe at 15 yards but she had 3 fawns with her. I had gotten drawn on her, settled my pic and then one of the fawns attempted to nurse. At that point i decided she was getting a pass. A little later, a nice doe worked its way out toward the foodplot just out of range. As she approached the edge, something made her uneasy so she came running back toward my way. This time coming by at 24 yards and wasn't as lucky as the doe from earlier. Since she was alert when i shot she ducked quite a bit but still ended up getting both lungs and she didn't make it far.

Got out this morning for some spot and stalk mulies. Spotted a group of three bucks that were definite shooters, just couldn't close the deal.

What is the paper laying on the doe?

Did you use the telecheck to check her in? Did that work OK?

Nice job I hope to be posting a deer pick in the next few weeks of my first archery deer!

The piece of paper is for a deer contest on another forum. The internet deer check worked great and only takes a couple minutes. I initially tried using the telecheck and it has a little issue. You can't check deer in with the bonus part of your tag as it has a "B" in the permit number. You cant enter a "B" on a phone. They give you a second number that you can call but unless you are calling during open hours when someone can answer then that number doesn't do you any good.

Thanks! I was thinking maybe I was missing a contest on this forum!

That is good to know about the bonus tag, as I will most likely fill that one first.

Default First Archery Hunt

Went out this past weekend for my first archery hunt. Was excited b/c I was the only one with permission to hunt 100+ acres of wooded river bottom. Set my stand the 1st week of Sept, and waited. For my first time hanging a stand I picked a decent spot, it is a clearing at the edge of the property adjoining a corn field and with a small raven/creek running behind me. Turns out it was a whitetail highway. Got out about 3 am Saturday as my plan was to go out Mon/Tues since I had the day off but with talks of rain I left early. Seen a nice 8 point in the corn field which I don't have permission, and some does on sat. Then on Sunday I spooked one getting into my stand at about 615am thought I blew the morning but a nice spike came through at about 5-8 yds thought for sure he'd wind me, I let him walk. But it was the first time a deer had been close enough to almost jump on which was awesome. So I go out for my evening hunt and hear deer all over the creek and pond that is behind me so I just keep waiting then out of nowhere a doe and her fawn come out of nowhere. The fawn had lost her spots so I decided the doe was going down if she gave me a shot. She presented a quartering away shot so I set my sight pic and let one fly. Went through the lung and out the right side of her throat. She ran 10-15 yds hit a fence as she tried to jump it and it was all over. She was alive for about 5 seconds after the shot. I'm frusterated a little b/c I booked my vacation for the first 2 weeks of Nov. Oh well I'll try to enjoy Hawaii... Anyway I'm super pumped to get back there for a buck later in October. Definitely got the bug...

My first night in a treestand was last night, turned out to be more than Ive dreamed about.

Perfect pinch point, over 40 deer walked under me. Only 3 small bucks, so I decided to shoot a doe under 10 yrds. She went 50 yards before she tumbled so I sat back down. 8 minutes later, another group come and I watched a big doe try to kill all the others. Ears back, feet kicking at them and trying to bite. Decided I didnt like her style, knocked one and drilled her through the lungs while she sniffed my bloody arrow. She was HUGE!The big group of bucks came out late. Maybe next time.

Im kinda diggin' this bowhunting thing.

That is awesome! ha

Im a waterfowler at heart but this time of year you cant beat sitting in a tree stand when not much is going down for fowl.

My first day was Friday and must say that I was happy as a little gurrrrl. Got out about 530am and was ready to rock. First trail cam had about 100 pics on it with some nice bucks but noticed the past week that they had not been there and most the activity was in evening. Sat it out in that stand till about noon then headed to another stand where I had another camera. 221 pics on it and same thing with nice big bucks but they had been gone for a week and only activity was some does in evening. I pulled an all dayer and ended up seeing 3 deer.

Saturday hunted till about 11 and not a deer seen with my eyes. Did hear one snorting when I was walking in. That evening had a nice doe come in with a fawn that was really young so I passed. I did have a nice buck walk up the next valley over and sit and graze there for about 20 mins. He would have got shot if he chose the valley I was in.

Sunday was a bust as well even with changing to 2 totally different stands that historically I never see anything in. Well history repeated.

Accepted my defeat and headed home along with my ground blind. Going to work on getting my nephew his first deer. Kid hasnt killed a thing in his life but going to watch him smack a doe here saturday morning. Im more pumped about that than anything!
