Hunted the same marsh as yesterday. Bird numbers were way down from yesterday. Birds were skittish from all the pressure. Ended up with 7. 2 bw teal, 2 spooners, 1 nice drake woodie, 1 gadwall and 1 drake mallard. Will be at it again next weekend.

Not much at all today as far as migrating birds go, but the migrators yesterday didn't care much for us anyway. Ended this morning with a 5 man limit. 29 gadwall in 2 days. My nephew even had his first waterfowl hunting experience.

Ross,

Is that your midget or one you just claimed for the morn?

couldnt get out til this afternoon due to work. saw plenty of teal, both blue and green, but only saw 4 big ducks..kinda weird i thought compared to everyone elses reports. did have 6 specks work us for about 2 minutes until they decided no goose decoys meant no good. still fun though....

had a first happen tonight, actually got shot. had a dip**** show up 2 hours after us and decide he was more important than us and down winded us by about 100 yards and just sat in the reeds and skybusted. ended up shooting at a couple of teal and hit us while we laid in our layouts. my buddy actually had a couple bb's penetrate through his layout, but didnt make it through his waders and jeans luckily. He actually was able to pick up 3 or 4 of the bb's and i swear that had to have been Ts or something. probably some of the bigger ive ever seen...moron. just lucky someone didnt catch one in the eye or something. conveniently, he wouldnt come over and talk about it and made sure he made it back to the parking lot before us.

Me and the fellas took a 4 man limit of Canadas Sunday. Even picked up 2 bands, stopped by the duck blind afterwards and didn't see much of anything.

well the weekend started by getting up an hour late and to heavy snow. we headed west and it was like we were in space. the huge snow flakes in the head lights were mezmorizing. past york I-80 was snow and ice covered. we headed to our first spot and nothing flying at all. we started scouting heading back east. no birds were seen until 830 am. then we followed some dux and over hill we found our new spot. After a 20 minute chat with the farmer(our new best friend) we had a private new spot that has lots of water. so we kicked off the 200-300 dux off and set up at around 930. it didn't take long and we were into some dux, nothing hot and heavy but every 20-30 mins we would get a group. The specks were rolling and we weren't getting any looks in the am. the local CO paid us a visit and was on his way after checking us and our birds(nice guy). We didn't see a ton of birds. we ended up with 20 dux and 1 speck 3 guys 2 days. nice variety with some young drakes pinnys, widgs, gaddys 3 teal, ringer. the speck was a juvie we decoyed a nice flock but they saw us at the last second. wasn't too bad for a late start and having to find a new spot!

Default Sunday

Sunday greeted us with 24 degree temp, overcast skies and snow on the ground in South West Nebraska. We drove the hour to our scouted location and set up the decoys. Birds were flying and decoying pretty well. Three of us hunted and filled our limit in a couple of hours. Would have been done earlier if we could of hit those little devils coming through the decoys at Mach 1 speed. We ended up with 6 species of birds shot over the first two days, green wings, blue wings, wigeon, gadwall, mallards, and a northern shoveler. Can't wait till we get a push of northern mallards in the area.

Shot a three man limit on saturday, mostly gadwalls, and wigeons, also had pintails, blue and green wing teal, a ringneck, and a red head. Tons of birds migrating...holy cow! Was an extremely fun hunt. Also had a large group of specks circling our spot while at the same time hundreds of ducks were landing and buzzing our heads...one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. Hear is me looking like a mountain man.

Reading reports from Nodak its almost depressing. Sounds like many areas lost 50% or better of thier ducks over the weekend with alot of water already froze. What could have been "one of those" seasons with a bumper hatch might end up being just another season with guys wondering where the birds are, and a million empty promises of Mallards stacked up north that never move. True we havnt seen much for Mallards yet but they could have stuck to the river, only the weekend will tell that story. One thing I noticed this weekend at least where we were at was Teal were almost nonexistant while it was litterally a CONSTANT stream of migrator Gads and Wigs bombing that place...everytime you got out to pickup dead you screwed up 3 flocks only to get into another bunch within 5 minutes of getting back in the boat, went on like that for hours.

Im sure the LPL opener will be pretty damn good this weekend but for now Im not all that impressed with the outlook for the rest of the season...basicly the entire season.

I am pretty dang stoked to see a warmup in the forecast. Since when has that came from a fowlers mouth in October?

Got out late saturday night due to work in the SE part of the state, we got 2 green wings due to poor shooting probably coulda had at least 6 but my shooting was terrible (once again ), all we saw saturday night was teal and lots of migrating specks
sunday morning we shot four, 2 gads, a bull pintail, and a blue wing. Shooting was much better we just didn't see near as much, coulda had at least 3-4 canadas if the season was open, the big guys wanted to die but we let 'em land just cuz it was cool then we told 'em to come back in 2 weeks , didn't see near as much migration sunday morning as we did saturday night, had to pack it in so i could write a paper and study some physiology (once agian ) and as we were picking up 4 mallards wanted to land, go figure always happens, but those were the only mallards we saw all weekend, oh and we had a guy come out w/ his dog and try to pass shot some of our birds, lucky for him the ducks pretty much shut off by then but he did manage shooting at some canadas that flew over him about 70 yds high....
All in all not an overly succsessful weekend but a fun one none the less

Default Day 3

Went out this after noon. Alot less ducks in the area. I managed to kill a limit though. Drake mallard, pintail, gadwall and 3 teal. I am going to try to hit it tomorrow morning before I have to go out of town for the next 4 days.

Basins are getting very stale... Took yesterday morning off to scout, mainly for specks. Came up short on the bars, but found a basin with some ducks for today. Most wetlands I checked and the hunters that I talked too said the same thing: nothin doin.

It was slower. Not a ton of movement, but some and very consistent. Ducks were skittish. You could even see most of the teal flippin you the middle feather. Mallards ate the call to the gun barrel. If you would have set it down or not picked it up, they left in a heart beat. Hardest limit so far; took quite a bit of work. No new ducks from the N wind over night.

Greenheads showed some great plumage. Probably/maybe could have waited around and shot a limit of greenheads, but filled up on teal instead.

A single baby speck flew over fairly high. First note and he had already turned and and started coming down head first. It was about 100% mesmorized by the call; didn't even have time to turn off the mojo before I needed to grab my gun. First one of the season, hopefully many more will come the next few weeks.

Unless some fronts sweep through between now and this weekend, I can already tell you that this weekend will be very slow in the basins. Looks like a chance late this week for some low pressure systems. We need it.

PO
